speed sensor?

Ok, so I have a 99 grand Cherokee Laredo with the 16. For the last year or so I have had periods of time when the speedometer and tachometer didn't feel like working. It didn't really bug me so I left it alone.
In the last few months I have had a problem when coming to a stop my jeep wanting to keep going as if the jeep thought my wheels were locking up and abs would kick on. So I unplugged the abs fuse under the hood and that has stopped for now but not my speedometer and tachometer hasn't worked at all since.
Are both problems related? I assumed that the abs was a censor or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: speed sensor?

Both rear wheel speed sensors are used (via ABS controller) for the vehicle speed indication. Not sure now, but i think that this speed signal goes from the ABS controller via the PCI data bus to the instrument panel. The PCM gets the rpm signal from the crank sensor and sends this signal via the PCI bus to the instrument panel. Not sure now what the connection is between the odometer signal and the rpm signal. You will need to get the ABS controller scanned to know which sensor is the problem. I would also check the connectors from the speed sensors for moisture and/or corroded pins.

I know it's been a bit since I last responded but I have new info.
I belive that I have replaced the speed sensor in my transfer case instead of my transmission so my questions are.

1, is the speed sensor for the trani the same as the transfer case?

2, some fluid fell out during the removal of the sensor so how do I go about checking and filling the transfer case?

This is my build info :

Re: speed sensor?

The 242 T-case has no speed sensor, it only has a position sensor.
There is a speed sensor on the transmission overdrive gear case, but as far as i know its not used for vehicle speed indication.
For checking the fluid level in the T-case, remove the upper plug on the back side of the case (allan head). The fluid level should be just at the level of this plug. Donīt remove the lower plug, because that is the drain.

Is the position sensor the same thing as a speed sensor.
I realize that they have different jobs but I'm wondering if they function about the same way.
What kids of problems could be happening cuz I have the wrong part in?

Re: speed sensor?

No, the position sensor is not a speed sensor. It gives the position of the T-case (4-Hi, 4Lo etc) to the PCM.
Did you change the sensor on the T-case? Did you compare the sensors? Did they have the same connector?
Not sure what the PCM will do with the position information, at least one function is to show the 4x4 part time or 4-Lo positions as an indicator light "PART TIME" on the instrument panel.
Did you solve the speedo and tacho problem?

Since mistaking the two I have been in part time and 4 wheel hi.
The parts did look very similar and do have the same connector.
I have yet to buy and install a new speed sensor.
Thank you for the info.
