Stalling problem possibly?

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I've been having issues with it randomly stalling out. It's an automatic and I'm not sure what's going on. The PCM seems to be running just fine. For the most part the jeep will run. When it decides not to start it will act like it is going to turn over but it doesn't fully kick on. Sometimes it will start smelling like gas after trying to start it and other times the battery will drain itself dead once I give up on trying to start it. I'm getting a fuel pump to try to see if that helps but I'm really at a loss on what it could be.

Re: Stalling problem possibly?

Welcome to the garage.
Did you check if there is any fault code set in the PCM? Could well be a problem with the crank position sensor or cam position sensor.
Since it starts smelling raw gas after trying to start, it seems that fuel is injected, so i would not expect the fuel pump to be the problem. If there is a schrader valve on the fuel rail, then you can check if there is fuel under pressure by pressing the core valve. Catch the spilled fuel with a rag.
If it has the 4.0 engine, its worth to check the wire bundle where it runs at the rear side of the cylinder head. The bundle can shave against a stud and the isolation can be damaged and cause a short.

Ok I guess that's the next steps we will be doing. It is a 4.0 engine so I'll look at that today. Thanks for the advice

Re: Stalling problem possibly?

Check if sensitive to the ignition switch. I had a problem where the Jeep would stall and sometimes I could even give it gas to rev up the engine and get through it. If it stalled out, often it would crank away and not start. I eventually noticed sensitivity to jiggling the ignition switch. There was some corrosion. Replacing it and the connector fixed the problem. It is well over a year and this intermittent problem never returned.

Re: Stalling problem possibly?

I didn't even think about that. I'll have to look into that a bit more. I have been able to get through the stalling before with giving it gas so maybe that is where the problem lays.

Re: Stalling problem possibly?

It is the one at the end of the harness that plugs into the ignition switch. It was done at the dealer. They replaced the ignition switch, cut off the connector from the harness and replaced it with a new one.

Re: Stalling problem possibly?

Ok I have someone coming to check it out today. I don't handle electric stuff on vehicles often so I don't really know how to tell if that's the issue.

So he is pretty sure it's the ignition switch so now we just have to get the part to swap out.

Re: Stalling problem possibly?

Good luck and hope it works out. Mine was a 96 with the 4.0 so about the same age if it turns out to be corrosion associated with the ignition switch.
