Still searching....

Problem: Jeep will not start without giving it gas. Have to keep the rpms up to keep it running until it gets warm. During the rest of day it will start without giving it gas, but it is delayed.

Have already replaced fuel filter/regulator. Has new plugs, clean air filter, fuel system has been cleaned. Most of my troubleshooting through the web have pointed several different problems including fuel pump, TPS, Cat, and battery.

Any suggestion to narrow it down before I spend all week changing out parts?

Re: Still searching....

Sounds similar to what I had, problem was the battery for me. Do you have the check engine light on?

Re: Still searching....

I had a similar problem as well. I came to the conclusion it was the TPS. However, I did not change it. I put a small rubber cap on the stop for the throttle (where the throttle arm rests when not pushed). It worked good on mine. Stated and ran good cold and after it warmed up it would turn about 800-900 rpms. Hope this helps.

Re: Still searching....

Engine light hasnt popped up yet. Going to test battery this afternoon. The battery only has 3 years on it. Also going to do a fuel pressure test tonight.

Re: Still searching....

Did you have a look at the IAC stepper motor? After some time the IAC stepper motor and air passage get really dirty and can even get blocked completely. Engine idle speed is controlled by the IAC stepper motor.

Re: Still searching....

PROBLEM FOUND: Battery was bad.

Hard for me to believe at first, because the last time the battery went it was completly different symptoms.

I am glad this happened this way though. While working on it replacing the fuel filter and battery, I found two bad vacum leaks in the rear of the jeep. One on the gas tank and another on the leak detection pump (I didnt know this was even back there). Those hoses just crumble after 110,000 miles. Also found bad oil leak. Turned out several oil pan bolts were loose enough I could turn them by hand.

Thanks for all the help.

Justin
