Trouble with back up light

My backup light only comes on when you hold reverse tight like you are about to shift into neutral or park, if you just put it in reverse it won't come on. I used to be able to bump it and it would work. Where do I look for a loose connection? 2004 jeep gc with 4.0 6 cyl 2wd. Shifter is in the console.

O yes, we do care, but just simply sometimes have other occupations

The 42RE uses a combined Park/Neutral and reverse switch, which is mounted on the outside of the tranny. The switch can be faulty, but first check if the shift cable rigging is ok.

Re: Trouble with back up light

Yep, the name is neutral safety switch. It prevents starting in other then park and neutral and has a separate contact for the backup lights. Did you check the rigging first?

Yeah, it's fine. I appreciate it. I was worried it was going to be in the white box attached to the bottom of the gear shifter in the console.
