Very odd noise

Okay so I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler tj sport 4.0 inline 6 with only 56,000 original miles on it the jeep is all stock original I had it for 10 months and just started have my first round of problems I got in it after work one day to see my engine light is on and on my way home I get on the highway and when I hit 35mph on I hear a noise that sounds like a ballon loosing air as if you untied the knot anyway I bring it to the shot the next day to find out I need 2 O2 sensors, valve cover gaskets and steering stabilizer so I get them put in and asked about the noise he said he heard it during the test drive and he said its probably some kind of grease thing and should go away thing I don't remember exactly what he said anyway I'm wondering if anyone else has had this noise before? or can tell me what it is? I appreciate the help

If your mechanic said it like this, i would look for an other. If it is a "grease thing", i presume it would be a "missing grease thing", and that will not become ok doing nothing.
Regarding the noise, can you tell where it is coming from, forward/mid/aft?
Is the noise changing with speed, or is it constant, once it appears?

Re: Very odd noise

Well I am bringing it to another shop anyway because I need to get the rear main seal replaced so I'm going to have this mechanic listen to it and see what he says but I wanted to give him something because I have no clue it's 35mph plus, it sounds like a shopping bag catching wind but I looked under the whole jeep, nothing when I first heard it I thought my tire was loosing air

Re: Very odd noise

It sounds like it's coming from either the center or rear of my jeep diffidently not the motor

Re: Very odd noise

If you could make a sound clip that would help.

Re: Very odd noise

My 2004 4.0L had a similar sound and it turned out to be the serp belt idler pulley. If you have a stethoscope or use a piece of hose to listen to the pulley while the engine is running, you can isolate noises. If this is the problem it is easy to fix.

Before you replace the rear main seal, run your hand along the back of the engine.
The valve cover on the I-6 tends to leak, where the oil runs down the back of the engine and mimics a leaking rear seal to a mechanic not familiar with the crappy valve cover sealing.

If you need to replace the valve cover,I'd spend the money on the Hesco aluminum one and formagasket the heck out of it. If the standard plastic one, don't try to tighten it, tends to make it worse.

The rear seals DO leak, the replacement ones seem to work a lot better. My factory one leaked at about 45K, the [stock dealer] replacement was dry at near 200K.

Re: Very odd noise

When i got my O2 sensors put in they also put a new valve cover gasket on and mentioned the main seal leak and said it was bad but they don't do that so im not driving it and I'm bringing it in tomorrow to another shop to have that done I'm also going to ask about the noise it just sucks because I had them do a mobile 1 oil change because you have to after a valve gasket change and now I'll have to pay for another after this shop does the seal I wish I knew and I would have got it all done in one shot
