Wk diesel...something weird is going on....

I have a 2008 wk diesel with 140000miles. I was on the highway when suddenly i saw the temp gauge close to red zone, shut it down asap and didnt notice any signs of overheat when in opened the hood, thermostat seemed to work fine and the radiator fan also. On the dashboard, no check engine, but on the screen it was written "transmission overheat". Ive waited 40min and the temp gauge was still in red zone and engine fan at maximum speed. Even the next day, started the trucks and temp gauge was already at the 1/3 of gauge.
Help!

Welcome to the garage.
The coolant temperature sensor is separate from the transmission temperature sensor, so when you have a high coolant temperature indicated and a transmission overtemp warning, i would suspect that there is a real overtemp. Donīt know the diesel, but expect to have the transmission cooler also inside the radiator. So if for whatever reason the engine cooling doesnīt work well, it can cause an overheat of the transmission fluid. A bad water pump could cause both problems, eventhough it seems to be strange that the coolant temperature indication shows 1/3 on a cold engine.

Just came back from the mechanics, changed the coolant temperature sensor and everything works fine, the guy wanted me to check with a transmission specialist and I (not a mechanic), told him to start changing the sensor, haaa! It was a good guess!
