WK Grinding Noise when turning

Hello,
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lts 5.7. Last summer I started to get some grinding noise after my Jeep sat for a few hours. It would happen in left or right turns but, only for the first 5 minutes of driving. It would then go away. Over the winter nothing really happened but, this summer the noise has returned and is worse. I did a bunch of research and have found that maybe the Diff fluid could be the issue so, last Friday I had that swapped out with adding some Kendall Friction Modifier. I also had power steering fluid done. This made it a bit less vibration/grinding/slight pops less but, seem to be returning back to normal after the weekend. I've heard the fluid matters so, not sure if that's the case.
I have taken it to 2 different shops and they looked at it for free and said that my front end seems solid and nothing appears to be wrong. They suggest taking it to a dealship as it must be internal. The dealership charges 120 bucks to even look at it.
I called a transmission place down the road and they'll take a look at it for free but, was wondering if anyone could point me the right direction? I've heard of a bunch of people having this problem and took a long time to track down with different results.

Thanks

Re: WK Grinding Noise when turning

could be a number of things from the diff to the sways. Take a look at the simple stuff first like the sway bushings ect.

As Scott said, It coult be a number of things, my first thought is honestly some diff services front and rear and make sure you get the Mopar LSD additive.... having said that, again it could be any number of things.

You may have a diff solenoid that is hanging up preventing the gerotor pump from venting properly. Can you feel a binding?

Re: WK Grinding Noise when turning

Yes, I feel a little binding and then it kinda releases when I straighten out. I just took it to a transmission shop and they drove it. They said it was some kind of clutch in my Transfer Case. I did not change this fluid. I asked if it were in the Differential and they said it was not in there or my shafts. Tehy said to tear it down would be $375 and to replace that part which is what they believe it to be is $800 and I'm looking at roughly 1300-1500 to fix. Should I do the mopar fluid to both the Diff and Transfer case before spending this kind of money? Unfortunaltey they didn't put it in the air or anything.

Yes, do the services first, then take it out and do 5 or 6 figure 8's to really get the fluids worked around. You need the nv245 fluid for your transfer case. I REALLY dont like that diagnosis... It may be right but it takes a special person to know the bind is in the transfer case and not in the front our rear axle which would create the same symptoms... Take it to another shop for a second opinion before droping that scratch... Maybe one that actually racks the jeep before offering to take 1000 of your dollars on a slightly educated guess.

Re: WK Grinding Noise when turning

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I got the Mopar NV245 fluid last night. 2 of them for 24 bucks so, I'm going to swap fluid this weekend hopefully and I'll report back with findings.

Re: WK Grinding Noise when turning

I put in the NV245 fluid last week and still have the issue. Seemed like it got a bit better for a couple of days and now it's back to the same ol grinding when turning. Still only for the first 5-10 minutes of driving then it's smooth. Anyone got any other ideas I could try before throwing 1100 bucks at a transfer case and motor? I would like to try the motor first if people think this might fix the issue but, if it won't I won't waste the time.

Thanks

Re: WK Grinding Noise when turning

I've done a bunch of research on this and some people say CV Axle, some people say Diff and some people say Transfer Case. I do have clicking in my front right CV Axle. I changed Diff Fluid (But not with Mopar, added Kendall Friction Modifier). I've also changed Transfer Case fluid and added 2 Quarts of NV245. Little bit of spilliage but, took both so, I'm guessing it's full as I believe it's supposed to take 2 quarts. Should I just suck it up and have the dealer take a look? It's not covered under warranty so, I'll have to pay 125 dollars just to look at it.

It's really hard to diagnose just going by your description. Let's see what Andrew....2005jgc had to say.

Re: WK Grinding Noise when turning

I've got the identical issue and neither the stealership or my preferred shop can determine the cause. It's either too warm to replicate or lifted so it's not the same as a cold start and then that first turn of the wheel as you move forward. It's frustrating that even the dealership seems willing to play the game since I even kept it overnight for them and still no idea. Have you figured anything out since your last post?

Re: WK Grinding Noise when turning

If your tranfercase service didnt help do your front and rear diff services as I suggested in my first post, and again like my first post suggested make sure you add mopar lsd additive. The lsd additive is a "friction modifier" that makes the oil more slippery that helps the clutches to slip.

It sounds like you have a gear oil or a transfer case problem. It soulmate's like the transfer case is keeping itself in 4x4 which will tear your differentials up. This happened to my dad and your transfer case is all electrical with it being so new. I would advice you to get your transfer case looked at and get it fixed before you end up blowing out the teeth on the gears in the differentials. You can't drive on dry pavement in 4x4. Bad deal!
