1993 zj

Maybe going to look at a '93 ZJ for an occasional snow driver. Anything to look out for? It's a 4.0l with 159k miles... TIA

Tranny Boss! Make sure the owner doesn't drive it before you test it out.

Test everything out. Make sure 4WD does engage. Put it in Neutral and Shift the Lever.

Also do a Full Complete Circle and see if it hops yes hops.

All that I'm saying is this, I never met a ZJ owner with over 120K miles that hasn't done a transmission overhaul. I was able to stretch mine to 131 but that was after I damn near had to run it to red line to hit 2nd gear. And like Paul said, make sure that the car is cold when you drive it. Once that transmission gets all warmed up, it would act like it doesn't have a problem at all. Plus another thing to look out for is both the heating and cooling system. That heater core is a bitch in a half.

Re: 1993 zj

My ZJ tranny was original at 211k. All it needed was a Governor Pressure Solenoid Valve and it would of shifted normally again.

You have now.... 140k and it's bulletproof...on a 1996 plate..

I just wish I could say the rest for the electrics!

Still fighting to keep her alive though...

Question: just what does the "hop" mean? Good or bad?

Re: 1993 zj

it refers to the Viscous Coupling in the transfer case.. only have to worry about it with the 249 / All Wheel Drive transfer case.. this case was found only in V8 Jeep ZJs, and some I6 ZJs... it does not affect driveability. mine has over 200K on the original viscous coupling.. all will hop if you get them hot enough. mine will chirp 32s in a parking lot at low speed after i drive for about 4 hours str8 up and down the curvy mountains... but if i take my front driveshaft off, it will drift away while in park... so dont let the chirp get to ya..
