Question 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9L

Hi, My name is Ron.I have been a member for almost a year but I guess I never posted anything so I will now!
My jeep is overheating because the electric fan stopped running. It has a new fan motor.I noticed when I first bought the jeep in 2014 only low speed worked on the fan.I thought it was the motor so I replaced it with an SHO Ford fan motor.I still only had low speed and the relays seem to work.Just the other day I was on the hiway and the dash lights came on to check gauges and the needle was pegged.I pulled over and shut the jeep off.I had it towed back home.Next day I checked fluid level or leaks and all was ok.I started it up and let it run and the electric fan did not come on at 210F.I believe it is the cooling fan switches in the upper and lower radiator hoses.I went to the mopar dealer and they are discontinued.I checked all the parts stores in the area and they donot list it.I checked on the internet an could not find anything.I can not run the jeep without them.
Does anyone have an idea if some company makes the switches for this jeep.I am in a bind and winter is here,it figures.
Ron

Re: 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9L

When you are on the highway, the electric fan should not be necessary for the cooling, the forward speed should be enough.
Besides that maybe the cooling fan is not working, there seems to be other cooling problems as well. Was the thermostat changed lately? Is the radiator not plugged?
Is there no junk yard in your nabourhood where you can find the temperature switches?

Hi Frank,
The thermostat was changed a year ago when I flushed the cooling system. The cooling fan motor was replaced last fall.
When the vehicle reaches temperature 210F the fan would not come on and the the jeep would overheat. The issue is the cooling fan temp switches they are both no good. The low hose switch is for hi speed fan the upper hose switch is for low speed on fan.Switches are discontinued from manufacturer because the 5.9 jeep was a 1 year build. The electric fan was to save hp.
I jumped across the terminals in the wire of both switches and the fan worked which told me the switches were bad.I found a switch thru Amazon or Ebay that had the same 3/8"pipe thread but only had 1 positive connection so I cut off the connector and added a spade female connector to the switch, then I had to ground the T pipe in the hoses. It now is working. The temp range on the switch is 210F on,185 F off.The swiches were $10.00 ea.I hope they last for awhile.
Thanks,
Ron
