Question 3.5'' iron rock lift

So this is my zj

Ive been planning to lift my jeep a couple inches whenever i get it back from the shop and ive searched everywhere for a cheap but decent lift.

I found this one http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/Merch...egory_Code=ZLK and i want to but a 1'' spacer to make it about 4.5''

BUT, i wanted to know how much i would have to drop the transfer case. they have a drop kit for like 30 bucks but its only 1''.

any opinions?

Re: 3.5'' iron rock lift

That lift looks pretty cool. I might do the RC 3.5" lift in my 97 ZJ http://www.roughcountry.com/jeep_zj_3.html

Re: 3.5'' iron rock lift

I'm running the benchmark kit from IRO with new IRO rear springs, fixed IRO arms, IRO adjustable trackbars, and some other stuff. I'm sitting at about 4.5" in the rear and 4.25" up front. I added a .75" spacer up front because I was sitting a lot higher in the rear before. I didn't drop my transfer case at all. If you adjust the caster of the front axle, you can get the front pinion angle dead on. My rear is slightly off, but I don't get any vibes. I may eventually get adjustable uppers for the rears to make it perfect, but for now, I'll stick with my fixed arms.

Re: 3.5'' iron rock lift

Nomatter what lift you're running you shouldn't need to install a transfercase drop. I've seen people with 7" of lift without them

Re: 3.5'' iron rock lift

It's all about keeping the pinion angles correct. If you keep running the stock arms, the pinion angle will be dead on. It will change if you change the arms. You're best off with adjustable arms to keep the pinion angles dead on. When you look at it, you lift it to gain more ground clearance, then do a transfer case drop which will only hurt your clearance where a ZJ really needs it most. I'll tell you first hand, even with skids, scraping is one of the worst sounds...

Re: 3.5'' iron rock lift

I did the 3.5" lift using the Rough Country kit, plus removed my stock coil isolators and put a Daystar 1.75" coil spacer kit. (without the isolators the 1.75" kit becomes 1.0")
At a total of 4.5" of lift you are still able to use the stockscontrol arms, but I chose the stronger Rough Country lower arms that came with the kit.
You can retain your stock Trac-bar, but need to relocate the axle mounting hole, I just gave it a .250" more than the 3.5" lift kit recommended .750" to make up for the increased lift.
You can do the steering alignment yourself. Toe-in is at .250" (tape measure from tread to tread, front closer than rear. Caster should be set at 5.5 degrees. (use a inclinometer (downloadable free app for iphone or android) on top of your steering knuckles flat spot to check. Camber is preset by Dana 35 axle.
At 4.5" It has become noticeable that I am also in need of an extreme drop pitman arm to correct the steering geometry. There is definitely more play in the steering with the lift. Make sure it is called the extreme drop pitman arm, as this item is shared with the Jeep TJ and XJ. The regular pitman arm from a ZJ can be used for a 4" lift on a TJ or XJ. (an 8" lift TJ pitman arm is only good for a 4" lift on a ZJ")
