4.0 to 5.9 engine swap

Hey! I'm new here. New to Jeeps but not to Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep. I just picked up a '98 Grand Cherokee Laredo 2WD and though the 4L runs great, has only 137k on it and everything seems tight, I would like to swap it out for the new performance built 5.9 and 46RE engine/trans from my '97 Dodge Dakota 4x4. The Dakota has an "unfindable" wiring short in the chassis harness that keeps it unsmoggable and therefore off the road. I was going to part out the truck but when I found this Jeep, I thought why not, if its not too difficult. The truck's 5.9L (well, 6.0 really. Its bored 40 over, among other mod's) dyno's at 407 hp at the flywheel with the present tune and the 46RE is built to take over 700 hp. I think the Jeep is going to be entertaining to say the least, if everything works out. What I am here for is to find out what I will or may need to complete the swap. Has anyone done it in a 2WD model? Is it adviseable to convert the 4x4 tranny to a 2WD tranny or just spring for a lesser but guaranteed fit 2WD 46RE? I have read some on this site and others about just adding the 2WD tailpiece and calling it a day. Is that true? I know about the motor mounts and possibly the radiator. Has someone done this and can provide a comprehensive list for the DYI'er? I'm cautiously excited/optimistic about this but not unrealistic. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the reply and the links. Really informative. I just gotta digest it all. I'm still debating as to whether I should make this Jeep a fast cherokee like the SRT-8 or a prerunner. or maybe just leave it stock and save my money for a newer truck. Thanks again.

The prerunner is not fast bro. There is honestly nothing like having a fast jeep... I already have my 6.4l swap in my WK, so I want to make my zj fast too. The zj is lighter so it should be a fun car if made fast. I don't think itll be that expensive for you since you've already got the parts from your Dakota. I say go for it!

Maybe I'm just jaded by how much time and money I've put into the Dakota and I know I'm used to how heavy the Dakota is, even with the new motor but I am delightfully surprised at how nimble the Cherokee feels. I haven't checked the empty weight yet but it feels light and that is one thing that crosses my mind when i think of doubling the hp. Thanks again for the encouragement and your replies.

I believe on the Dakota the starter is on the drivers side. The grand cherokee is on the passenger. Would it not be easier to find a 5.9L grand and swap the motor?

The one advantage the 4.0 in the ZJ has is low end torque.
You might be able to get the 5.9 in there, and I'd leave it 4x4 if at all you can, since it can come out of the hole faster.

Since you sound like you like playing around, you might also want to look up Monster Forged 5.0 upgrades to that straight 6.

Or, maybe just a 4.5-4.7 crank with or without overbore and a Hesco supercharger.
Check out the Hesco billet water pump... doubt it pumps better but it is way cool.
