93 geand cherokee with a code 22

Went to pick up a transmission for my sister's jeep in my old 93 grand cherokee and it done fine all the way there and all the way back. It was about a 2 hour round trip. When I started it up to move it yesterday afternoon the check engine light popped on. That was odd so I scanned it and it had a 22 code in it which is a coolant temp sensor code. I had to run to town so I picked up a new coolant temp sensor while I was there.

When it finally cooled off yesterday evening I pulled the a/c compressor and belt off to get to the sensor and the wires going to the sensor were under the compressor. There's no tellin how long they been under it and it finally wore through and melted the wires together.

It's been several years since I have had the a/c compressor loose or off on this one, i'm surprised it hasn't gave trouble way before now. It is a 318 V8 and the coolant temp sensor is in a bad spot. The wires had melted back to the main harness and had all them wires stuck together too.

I cut the old sensor wires and ran two new one's and separated all the other wires and I couldn't wrap them with tape since they are so close to the intake so I took some thermo tec sleeving I had and cut it and wrapped it around the harness and zip tied it around the harness and the new wires going to the sensor too.

I was worried I may have messed something up in the PCM since the wires were melted together and were stuck under the a/c compressor but after I repaired the wiring I put it back together and started it up and it didn't throw a check engine light and it's running good so maybe I got lucky!!!

As an owner of a V8 ZJ, I appreciate this post about your experience with this scenario. I'm actually going to go check the wires on mine now 😁 .

Glad to hear it's all resolved... Thanks again for the post.

Re: 93 geand cherokee with a code 22

I don't drive this one all that much since I have two other jeep's to drive but my mom bought it new so it will be here til the end of time, lol. It had a spell awhile back and I replaced the map sensor and the TPS and it has been doing pretty good since then but I could tell it had another issue but it wasn't codeing out.

It ran good but seemed like it was running rich and it had an exhaust smell but didn't code out so I just drove it until yesterday when it had it's newest spell. I think the reason the rest of the wires were stuck together was because the two coolant temp sensor wires were getting hot from the a/c compressor being tightened down on them. They were burnt completely up and I had to dig a couple of inches into the harness to get to some good wire to splice into.

The rest of the harness looked ok and if I have any more trouble I will pull that harness up and really check it good since it had been pretty hot in that one spot.

I have drove it several times today and it seems to really be running good for it to be the old OBD 1 system. Since I got the wiring for the ECT sensor fixed up it has a better start up and a better idle it seem's. May just be wishful thinking but it does seem better to me...... Something to check if you have a V8 ZJ for sure!!!!!

Re: 93 geand cherokee with a code 22

I hear ya on the old OBD I system, mines a '95... So I have the same situation. I typically just use the ol "key dance" trick and watch the check engine light blink away.

Other than that, it's crazy what some experience, knowledge, and seat time will get ya 😁 .

Thanks again and best of luck.
