95 ZJ steering gearbox

Hey guys and gals

So I am pretty sure that my steering gearbox is loose and should be replaced. The problem is I am a college student and on a tight budget. I was thinking instead of getting a new one go to a junkyard and pick one up for cheap. The problem is that I do not know how to examine it to know that it is not worse then my original one. Anyone does? What signs I should look out for?
