97 grand 4.0 with no overdrive??

Anybody riding in their ZJ with the overdrive not working. My sister's 97 threw the belt and it knocked one of the cooler lines off for the transmission and also blew the radiator. I got it hauled to my house and replaced the radiator and belt and put a new thermostat in and got it back up and running. I also repaired the cooler line and started putting fluid in the transmission since I knew it would be low.

Well 10 quarts of ATF 4 later it was finally full on the stick. It's running fine and no overheat issues and still don't know why the belt came apart. All the pulleys and accesories seem to be fine.

Once I got it in the road I noticed it wasn't going into that final gear around 45 to 50 mph. The OD button is working and when I push it it kicks down a gear and when I turn it back on it goes back up a gear but it seems that the torque converter isn't locking up into the last gear.

I'm surprised that it even works at all after most of the fluid was missing when I got it back up and running. It pull's and shift's in the lower gears fine so overall the transmission seem's to be ok except for the final over drive gear. Anybody deal with this issue already?? Any suggestions are appreciated!!

I don't know the answer, but hoping someone here chimes in soon! My '93 Dakota sometimes won't go into overdrive, usually after not being driven in a while. One time, it was some kind of solenoid on transmission that caused that.

I think the OP is getting into od, but then the lockup of the torque convertor doesn't seem to be happening.

Yes, this is correct. The torque converter is not locking up. Even got a check engine light and scanned it and it was a torque converter not locking up code. Was thinking of swapping in a new converter to see if that fixes the problem but I have two used tranny's so it may be better to just swap in another transmission and get the lock up converter working again.

Re: 97 grand 4.0 with no overdrive??

Well my sister's transmission finally crapped out. She said a few weeks back it was doing something weird and thursday when I got home it was sitting here with a big puddle of trans-fluid under it and it was covered underneath it and all up the back hatch. Turn's out a 96 and 97 transmission are not the same according to several searches I have done and the one I already had out didn't look all that great so I decided to hunt a used one.

Found a used one about an hour away for $400 bucks. Pulled the old one out thursday evening and took off work friday and went and picked up the used one and came back and put it in and got it going by that evening.

It work's pretty good and the torque converter is locking up now too!! It worked out really good so she is back up and running again. When I blew out the trans-cooler lines there was alot of glitter in the fluid. I flushed it back and forth with brake cleaner several times until there was no shiny glitter coming out. I didn't drain the old tranny but I bet it looks bad in the pan!!!

It's been awhile since I swapped out a transmission and it's just as fun as I remember, LOL

Just glad it's working good again. Didn't cost as much as I was thinking either. :-)
