98 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.2

I just got a 98 jeep and it has 443257 miles. when I start it up it smokes. The smoke is white or a grayish color. has some smell . Can some one tell me what makes this happen?

White smoke when engine is cold is just condensation, but if it still does it when warm, then its probably coolant. Can be a head gasket. Is the smell somewhat sweet?

I would start with a tune up: new plugs, air filter, oil and oil filter. You can then see the color of the plugs and maybe discover more on what is going on. Is the smoke there on every start, cold or hot?

it seems to do it on every start up. but once warm the smoke is gone but the fumes are moist if you but your hand close to it.
