Cool A/C Damper Closes Under Engine Load

With the AC blowing into the cabin, whenever the engine comes under a load such as rapid acceleration or even going up a hill, the damper closes diverting the air up to the windshield defroster. As soon as I back off on the accelerator, the damper returns to the original position. I'm hoping the fix will not involve extensive dashboard disassembly (thinking it might be a vacuum line or something). other than this everything with the AC system works fine. Can anybody give me any ideas as to where to start?

Re: A/C Damper Closes Under Engine Load

You maybe already solved the problem, but if not maybe this will help. There most probably indeed is a vacuum leak in one of the lines, because without vacuum the windshield defroster is the default setting. Many times a leak occurs in the engine bay (worn through line or dried out rubber sleeve). Im not familiar with the ZJ, but try to find the vacuum line, it should be running from the engine intake. Check it very well for wear spots, cracks etc. The ZJ probably also has a vacuum reservoir, so also check the line towards the reservoir.
