Unhappy Another heat problem! Grrr

I see there are several heat issues out there. Just got my 98 gc on Sunday. It is the simple single system not the dual. I can only get heat from the defrost and it seems to fade in and out. Was messing with it this morning and jiggling the key seems to kick it in but not always. It blows hot when it does, cant get it to come from bottom or vents.

Congratulations on your new ZJ!

The defrost only problem is symptomatic of a vacuum system leak, which sounds a whole lot worse than it really is.
Follow the rubber/plastic lines (black tubes) from your brake booster along the firewall. Somewhere between there and about 3/4 of the way over to the passenger side where they pass through the firewall there could be a leak or disconnected fitting.
If one of the lines itself is broken you can repair with a bit of shrink tubing or a piece of tubing that is slightly larger by sliding the broken ends into the new tubing.Even some tape will do in a pinch.

As for the fading in and out, you can check underneath the glove box, look for a white plastic wiring connector.
Should look like this-

Sometimes the black wire overheats and gets a bit loose which makes your high fan setting not work. You can just try to tighten it by squeezing or something or cut and splice the black wire. Jiggling it first with the blower on high will let you know.
Only high blower and no low setting means the blower resistor is fried, but that's not horrible to replace.
Heck, almost nothing on these things is hard to replace!

No heat can also be caused by bad water pump, stuck thermostat, clogged heater lines/core, or no coolant.

Re: Anoother heat problem! Grrr

Hey
thanks for the reply. After doing lots and lots of research I do believe it is a vacuum problem. ran out of light and patients for the day.
the fan blows on all of the settings low thru high. a bit loud but it starts to fade to nothing for no apparent reason. I shut the door as I was finishing this afternoon and it kicked back on. but only for a little time and faded out again. Have to look into the wiring a bit more.

When I lived in the mountains, mice loved to chew on my old ZJ.
They got a couple of the plug wires, the rear wiper fluid tube, got through my CPS wires(twice!), and one of the thinner vacuum lines. I just took an extra piece of weedeater fuel tubing I had laying about and forced the two broken ends into it, never had any more problems.

Good luck!

Another good fix for hard vacuum lines is to "patch "it with the glue filled heat shrink. works great!

Thumbs up Re: Anoother heat problem! Grrr

Ah the vacuum leak is now a problem solved. Excellent!! thanks guys .84 cents for a piece of vac line. the pc was deteriorated at the T before the firewall. very easy fix once you know what your looking for. The fan still seems to have an issue blows well sometimes and then fades out to nothing. then will kick in for a few and fade again? Not sure what that is all about.
Lastly I don't know anything about the thanks thing so if someone could inform me there I am more than happy too dole em out.

Thanks
Bones

I'd check the blower motor resistor and the connector I mentioned first, both under the glove box. Otherwise you might be replacing the blower itself or the blower switch.

There's a great resource at this link, it has an online ZJ factory service manual in case you need it-

Re: Another heat problem! Grrr

Thank you Gentlemen!!!
Heat blows great. One vac hose and a clean blower power connection. Works like new!
I can't thank you both enough. The links are very helpful and the pic's made for very easy ID on connections.

Thanks
Bones
