Aprox Estimates for Repairs on '97 Grand Cherokee Larado

Hello fellow Jeepers! I stumbled across this website and thought I would try my luck at seeking opinions of other jeepers. As we know, it's not easy finding a reputable, honest mechanic in any city! After getting "shopping by phone estimates" of the repairs needed on my '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado, 6 cyl, 2-wheel drive, I'm wondering why there's so much discrepancy in the price of repairs.

The repairs needed are: tranny hoses leaking and front crank seal leaking.
The estimates ranged from $59.00 to repair tranny hoses at one shop to $250.00 at another shop. Front crank seal ranged from $108.00 at one shop and $240.00 at other shop.

Does anyone know the approximate price of repairing these 2 leaks?

All feedback is appreciated.

Your two low estimates sound perfectly reasonable. Depending on where you live in the country you can get a pretty wide price range. A good baseline would be to call a dealer then go from there, if you can beat it by 50% or so you're doing good.

Also honest and reputable are pretty subjective words, the best way to find out is to watch/talk to whoever is doing the repair IMO. More money doesn't always mean better work and visa versa.

I agree with you about more money meaning "better" work! The mechanic who gave me the lowest prices has been around for 25 years, and works out of a lower rent district. I called the Better Business Bureau about him, and he's only had 1 complaint in 3yrs, which he made good on.

Thanks for your reply!
