Unhappy Complete loss of power when accelerating please help 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Driving out to see my BF this afternoon I noticed when I accelerated it hesitated a bit. I didn't think anything of it so I let it go. Driving home was another story. I was about 5 miles from home coming up to a red light and I started to brake, the light turned green and I hit the accelerator and I got no juice, I got across the highway and started to brake and the brakes locked up, the steering wheel locked up and then I lost all power. I got the Jeep to stop (right at the exit to a train station ) I tried to turn it back on and got no juice. I just got a new battery about 3 weeks ago. I called my BF, then I called 911 so someone could help get me out of the way since I was stuck in the middle of the road right outside the railroad station.
Officer asked me to try to crank the engine again, asked if I had gas (have 1/2 tank) and then got me pushed into a spot until I can get a tow to my house in the morning.

The car has been fine, I never put "off" gas in, try not to let the gas get below half a tank.

I don't know what the issue could be and if anyone here can help a girl out I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ashley~

Re: Complete loss of power when accelerating please help 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

really need more info like last time it had a tune up, if it wouldnt crank or turn over could be dirty battery connections or bad ground connection or bad starter
the running bad issue could be fuel pump or clogged fuel filter or if you happened to notice that all the idiot lights were on before all this happened it could be a bad alternater which made it run off the battery until the battery died, sorry to be so vague but until some investigation has been done its all guess work. keep in mind you need 3 things for it to run, fuel, air and spark do some googleing on those 3 subjects and put in how to check spark on a 94 grand cherokee 5.2
ill do the first one https://www.google.com/search?q=how+...hrome&ie=UTF-8

Re: Complete loss of power when accelerating please help 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

None of the lights were on. I'm not sure if the battery connections were changed when I got the new battery. When my battery was going the console kept resetting, i had none of those issues last night.

The only thing I noticed that was a little off was that it took an extra second or two to start, but it turned over and I made my way home. About 20 minutes into my drive home I went to accelerate and there was no acceleration (it hesitated about twice before that while driving home) then the brakes were hard to push and the steering was hard to turn. It was like I'd ran out of gas, but like I said, I've got a half a tank.

The car has been running fine, last night was the first time I've had an issue.

Check the battery voltage first. When at 12.7 the battery is full, when around 12.2 its almost empty. Could be a problem with the charging of the battery. Also possible is corrosion on the battery cables, difficult to see due to the wire isolation. The hard braking and steering was caused by the engine which stopped working, cutting the power steering pressure and brake vacuum.

Unhappy Re: Complete loss of power when accelerating please help 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Well, it turns out it's the fuel pump and the guy at the service station quoted me $650 for the job. I don't have that kind of money to put into this old Jeep Looks like she's a goner.

650 is still way cheaper than a car payment and full coverage insurance just something to think about. if however you still want to sell it post it up on here in the for sale area

Re: Complete loss of power when accelerating please help 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ken, I don't want to get rid of it and we've got a friend who's dead set on getting her running again. Local garage where I got her towed charges $98/hour. We looked into the part and it's under $200 and if we can get her done for under what the garage is gonna charge it I'll do it.
I love my jeep and the thought of getting rid of it is upsetting and we're doing what we can to save her

Re: Complete loss of power when accelerating please help 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Just joined this site a week ago, but I've been on several other Jeep forums for many years. I have a '97 Laredo 5.2 that I bought new. The fuel pump on mine ('96-98 GCs) is in the fuel tank, and I believe yours ('93-95 GCs) is also (although it's a different part number). That means to replace it, you need to drop the tank, and if you have a trailer hitch and/or fuel tank skid plate, those come off also.

Saying the $200 you quoted for the part itself is what the service station will charge, that means they estimate it will take about 4.6 hours @$98/hr., which may be the "book" rate for that job. It's not that difficult to do (technically speaking) if your bf is somewhat mechanically inclined, but dropping a tank that has fuel in it isn't fun. I'm not sure I could do it in that time by myself, but I'm getting old and decrepit. It definitely helps to have someone help out - one on each side removing the trailer hitch and skid, and then the tank itself - that makes it a lot easier. Hope that helps, and good luck keeping your baby on the road!

Sorry to hear that, but that is a long list of repair items. Are you thinking about a newer model GC?

Re: Complete loss of power when accelerating please help 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I would LOVE to get another GC, right now though financially it's not in the cards unless I win the lottery or find a preowned one for a good price.

I can't drive a car anymore.. I'm just not used to it, I refer to my BF's infinity as the flying carpet, it's so low to the ground.
