Craigslist ZJ

I found a '98 ZJ on Craigslist. It was high mileage and the ad mentioned that there was a noise in the front differential. The picture showed a straight complete ZJ with rusty rocker panels.

After a couple of calls with the seller I went and looked at it and negotiated the price to $450 and bought the Jeep.

It is a Laredo with a 4.0 six with more options than I care to list.

I plan to document the problems that I have found with the truck here along with the solutions to those problems and the cost in parts and labor.

The first problem was the terrible noise coming from the front diff. I pulled the differential cover off and found that the bolts for the diff. carrier bearings were loose and as a result, the ring and pinion were badly damaged.

In order to avoid pouring money into the differential repairs before assessing the condition of the rest of the truck, I pulled the ring gear and reassembled the axle.

I have since then installed a new water pump, installed all new hoses, repaired the exhaust, detailed the interior. and replaced a faulty amp on the sound system..

I have $175 in parts and another $175 in title and license fees so far. Along with the purchase price I have spent $800 so far.

I will post pictures and update my progress and expenses with each new repair.

GW

Re: Craigslist ZJ

Update

Since my last post I have made more progress on the Laredo which has been knick named "Reload".

I replaced the PNP switch so the backup lights will work. I overpaid $24.00 for the switch.

I picked up a set of barely used Firestone "Destination LE 2" tires for $150. These will be upgraded as soon as I decide what size and type of tire/wheel I need.

I installed Moog sway bar links in the rear and have the front links going in this week. $44.00.

I cut all of the rust away from the rocker panels, replaced the inner rocker supports and formed new rockers. There will be sliders or bars installed later on. $40.00

I installed new hinge pins in my drivers door, and it is as tight as new.$1700

All of the fluids are going to be changed this week.

This is what it looks like so far.

The to do list is as long as my arm. I will update as I check off the problems solved.

Re: Craigslist ZJ

The truck came without a jack or lug wrench. I bought a Harbor Freight aluminum floor jack for $65.00 today. It only weighs 32# and will fit in my smallish tool trunk. It will be a nice addition for on and off road. I carry a couple of 12 x 30 pieces of 3/4 plywood for use on soft ground.

Re: Craigslist ZJ

There has been a lot of progress on my ZJ. I swapped the NP249 for a 242, replaced the d30 with a low mileage JY donor. I added a 2" BB lift to fit my 265/75/16s along with 2" hubcentric spacers. I have upgraded to 703 4 port injectors and have a 99+ intake ready to install.

On the other hand I have replaced the Infinity Gold amp so my tunes work great. I evacuated and recharged my A/C and it blows 38* air. New hatch and rear window struts are in.

To make it possible to lift/pull/push on the soft front end I built a hard point that makes those things possible.

I also cut out the rockers and added 2"x6" 3/16" wall sliders from wheel well to wheel well.

I will post more pics later.

Re: Craigslist ZJ

I mentioned my 2"x6" rock sliders in an earlier post. They give the Jeep quite a bit of protection as they are welded into the uni-frame and the "B-pillar". I lifted the right side up to 32" with both right tires off the ground and all of the doors except the one blocked by the jack opened and closed just fine.

There is much more to come.

Re: Craigslist ZJ

We had a three hour trail ride Sunday. My Jeep Dog insisted.

We hit some local trails along the Eau Claire River.

The jeep ran great.
