Crazy Front End Noise

All,

On my 97 ZJ 4x4, I have recently replaced both of the wheel bearing hub assemblies on the front. For a few days, all was well.

Upon the 3rd day, it started making a very noticeable but not too horrible loud grinding type noise. Similar to if the calipers were squeezing the rotor. But upon applying brakes, noise did not go away. Next day noise was so intense in the front it was the same sound of a washing machine on a crazy high spin cycle BUT goes completely away when slightly steered to the right. When centered noise returns.

Anyone have clue? Front differential? Bad bearing? Drive train? *Note: Transmission has been slipping* It's not currently being driven due what's going on with it to prevent further damage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Crazy Front End Noise

Hi,
Read your post. By the way...this is my first post here on this site.

Several years ago I did the same job you're talking about, so I'm going by memory here. Do you think the problem could be the sheet metal backing plate behind the disc brakes? I seem to remember being puzzled about how that went back on.

What noise did it make prior to doing the job? Is it possible the wheel bearings weren't the problem? I know after doing mine the problem I was having/hearing turned out to be the carrier bearings in the front differential. I did that job myself and it was pretty involved. It's been fine since then.

I actually joined the forum yesterday trying to find info on changing out the viscous coupling. Mine is lurching and skids the front tires a little during sharp turns.
