Differential Question

Which differentials came on '96 ZJ with the 4.0L?

How good is the D35? Not familiar with it.

Re: Differential Question

Light duty. I have seen them hold up to 33's without the super35 kit, but generally thought of as trash for a wheeler. Small shafts, thin tubes, small ring gear.

Did any 'ZJ's come with the d44 or were they all the d44a? Is there a D44 that would be a straight bolt in?

It's a Dana 35. The presence or absence of the factory tow package is a good indicator of what gear ratio you have. Tow package is usually 3.73; no tow package is usually 3.55. There are exceptions to both of these.

They're in the ZJ's too

The 44a isn't really a bad axle. It's not as strong as a 44I or a 8.8 or blah blah blah, and the aftermarket support is limited, but it can be trussed just like anything else.

They have the 44a. Again, not a bad axle. The Viper and Corvette have both had bits and pieces of it under them as the 44ICA and 44IRS.

D44A is a good option for "bolt in". Anything from a '98+ 8.25 (found in XJ's), 8.8, XJ D44 (my option, but I already had it from MY XJ), whatever is a better deal than the D35 with a little bracket work. How big an axle depends on how you want to use the rig/tire size.

Wanting to build a trail rig with 33 up 35" tires. Plan on going with air lockers in the front and rear.
