Fuel tank over-pressurized

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L V8. I moved to 8700 FT elevation (which may have nothing to do with this). During a very hot day (100 F) while towing my 20 FT boat (3600 LBS) my gas tank builds pressure to the point that I get a strong smell of gas inside while driving down the road with the A/C on. I discovered that there is quite a bit of pressure in the gas tank after loosening the gas cap a little. So much pressure that it took about 8 minutes for the pressure to equalize (with the gas cap loosened (not removed) letting the pressure slowly escape. I was afraid to remove the gas cap completely. BTW, I have replace the fuel pump a few years ago. Can anyone explain what might be causing this and what I can do to fix it?

I have checked all vacuum lines associated with the evac canister purge system. One line was disconnected, but I am not sure if I inadvertently pulled it apart as I was moving and inspecting the lines. I also replaced the purge solenoid. I will be towing again this weekend. A 4.5 HR drive to Telluride with the ATV's in tow. If it still builds pressure and smells in the cabin, the canister will be the next thing to be replaced. I'll keep you posted.

Did you check that the lines are not blocked? There should be a vacuum and no pressure on the tank.
