Hello and help

Hi all,
Just joined and wanted to say hi and ask a question. I own a 93 Grand Cherokee limited with 5.2 V-8. I'm experiencing a drive train issue. After freeway driving and the running parts are nice and warm, when I try to make a low speed sharp left or right turn, the Jeep has a binding issue. I've been told its either the transfer case or rear diff. City driving only will not cause the problem nor will city driving after a freeway results in any issue.

Anyone know the cause and repair?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Hello and help

is this an AWD or selec-trac 2WD with t-case 4x4 shifter? That could be something as simple as a joint in the front axle

Re: Hello and help

Thanks for the reply.

It is the full time 4 wheel drive system.

Re: Hello and help

Viscous coupler in your np249 transfercase is toast. Easier/cheaper to replace with a 231/242 t-case if you/someone you know is mechanically inclined. Sometimes members of other boards that are more offroad oriented will have one for sale that still works decent if they've already done the swap. HTH.

Re: Hello and help

Thanks Sam,

I have had a few people drive it and some say they think its from the front, others the rear. The middle sounds just about right.

Re: Hello and help

Hi All,

I have another question regarding the transfer case. (Vista Cruiser, you were right) Will a 98 quad NV249 transfer case work on a 93 in place of the NP249 without having to do mods? From what I have researched the only difference is that the 98 locks front and rear axels in 4Lo.

Thanks again.

Re: Hello and help

Same as most common Jeep transfer case swaps. Make sure the inputs are the same length. There is a gear pitch change mid '95, so you won't be able to just swap the inputs around. New one is about $150.
