Re: Looking at getting a ZJ
i'll play both sides and say a zj is a maybe! If you can find one in great shape that has been maintained well, go for it. Some of the issues such as axle whine or viscous coupling binding aren't a reliability problem, they are just annoying.
Just make sure the trans isn't slipping or banging on shifts (not just a firm shift, or a clunk into 2nd gear when going slow, as they all do this). As long as the engine isn't smoking, it's probably good.
it's going to need some stuff right off the bat though.
$35-spark plugs, cap, rotor, pcv valve
$30 goodyear gatorback belt
lube everything up real good!!
potentially the intake pan gasket if you are using oil or pinging, this is the likely culprit.
use fel-pro gaskets for the pan, should be $40 for that + new manifold gaskets for oh another $40 or so.
Also potentially motor mounts, look up diy motor mounts and 3m window weld. It will fix your torn mounts. No need for an expensive replacement.
