Removing #1 Spark Plug

Any hints on how to get around the air compessor to pull #1 spark plug from a 4.0 98 Grand Cherokee. Do I have to remove the air compressor or does someone have a better idea.

Re: Removing #1 Spark Plug

I had an 88 cherokee with the 4.0, not sure how much the formation of the accessories changed between 88-98. I think I ended up using a universal joint with a long extention and went between the pump and the block. I could be totally wrong it was a while ago I had that one, but I do remember having a hard time changing that plug. I was a BITCH to change.

Re: Removing #1 Spark Plug

I'm not sure what the No1 is....

If it's the one nearest the front of the Jeep then I use a long extension and knuckle joint...

If it's the one nearest the cabin, I use a t bar...

Re: Removing #1 Spark Plug

Thanks for the input, it's the first plug up front and the air comp. is right in front of it where the spark plug socket won't fit between the valve cover and air comp.
looks like i'm going to have to remove the air comp. really didn't want to do that but I guess there is no other way.

Not sure if there is any difference in the engines between 1996 and 1998, but I don't have to remove anything?!?!!?

Re: Removing #1 Spark Plug

I'm looking at the wrong side of your engine.
It's on the other side next to your rad. hose

Yeah, but if it's the same engine, then there is nothing to remove to get the spark plug out...

I don't have to remove anything to get it out...

Yeah, it's the same...

What I'll do tomorrow is take a picture of the ratchet and the angle etc of how I use it, hopefully that will help you out!
