Removing radiator fan from 95 ZJ V8...

Greets all,

Seeing if anyone has a trick up their sleeve on how to get the radiator fan off of a 1995 ZJ 5.2 V8.

Long story short, this model does NOT have an electrical radiator fan. The radiator fan is mounted on an extension that comes off the water pump pulley. The issue I'm having is trying to unscrew the nut for the fan simply spins the pulley and does not break the nut free. It's obvious that the pulley has to be held still while the fan nut is unscrewed, but I'm not having the best of luck there. The strap wrench I have doesn't seem to hold the pulley that well. See pics / diagram below:

Any help is appreciated!

Had a ford Econoline with similar set up with the long open end tool that you may be able to borrow at one of the auto parts stores strike it with a wooden mallet or a piece of 2 by 4 to brake it free remember it may need to go clock wise in order to unscrew good luck

Thanks... Much appreciated. The Haynes manual mentions something about a special tool, so I'll have to look into that. The weather has been uncooperative lately, but once it clears up I'll try and figure something out with it.

I'm presently the owner of a 98 grand Cherokee Laredo it was brought to me and told, here a project that we know you can handle I've given it some TLC and its got a long way to but its running very good but I won't be fully content till I have it in near perfect running order I've always wanted a jeep 4 wd but this is a good start since it was my sisters from the dealer and ever since at the moment the odometer reads 127,500+ most major things have been done on it but k like to take it a step further just cause planing on trading up after will see only time will tell.

Sorry for the delayed reply, was out of town for a bit. I managed to get the fan off with the help of a second person and a larger / longer strap wrench. It's not easy and I'm sure there is a better way to do it, but it worked for me.

When I R/R my fan clutch nut, I use a long wrench on one of the four pulley bolts, leaned against the pulley, to keep the pulley from turning, while using a second wrench on the clutch nut.

No issue w/ this method.

Actually removed mine tonight easier.
Around the large nut, in the pulley, are 4 holes, put 2 bolts in them, don't have to fit perfectly, and wedge a large screwdriver across them, then turn the large nut.
