Will a 95 Grand Cherokee (4 liter 6 cyl, full time 4 wheel drive) keep running if the alternator fails intermittently? Symptoms are....volt meter shows loss of voltage, engine shuts off. Will restart after a period of time and run fine. Sometimes it starts as soon as 5 mins, sometimes have to wait 20 mins or more. Engine runs fine before stalling,,,,no missing, no surging. It just "shuts off" suddenly. Engine cranks over easily and quickly, but will not restart until I wait a while, as described above. Sometimes it stalls soon after starting running for the day. Other times it will run for and extended time (75 miles or more) or for several days without a problem. Sometimes it will act up several times in a short distance/time period.
I have done the following already....
New rotor, cap, and plugs.
New fuel pump, and wiring to fuel pump. (seem to have very good fuel pressure at the fuel rail).
Checked/cleaned throttle body. ( a little oil residue, but not really dirty)
Replaced air filter and cleaned air filter box (neither were particularly dirty)
Replaced battery with know good battery.
Cleaned and tightened battery terminals.
Checked grounds (body and engine, and battery ground)
Disconnected "brain box" (cpu) and cleaned connections, applied dielectric grease, and reconnected (did not seem to have any loose connections or corrosion.)
I am wondering if the alternator could be the problem....
