I'm going out here in a few to take the inner panel off. I just hope the lift gate opens, i'ts about 50-50 now if it opens or not. I just wish there was a way to open it if the handle doens't work. hehe

Re: Tailgate won't open--need new latch mechanism

Ok, an update. The inner panel looked similar, but I don't have the side latches, mine latches on the bottom. There was a rod that came up which I tightened in it's bracket, basically moving it three threads higher on the bracket wich seems to have remedied the issue. Just wish I had some RTV or something to hold it in place. I'll just have to watch it to see if it holds or if I'll need to try and rig something more permanant.

Great news, sounds like you got it fixed... and I just realized you have a ZJ, I must have glanced at the second post and saw "WJ", and then posted the WJ tailgate info.

same remedy for mine was to adjust the handle rod. I actually tweaked it and tacked it with the mig wilder to hold that spot. Mine has a little metal clip that kinda broke. My TG is dented from me banging trying to get in. Glad I was able to finally fix it

I don't know how to weld nor do I have the tools for it. I may try some JB weld or RTV. I leave the UK next Summer (2013) so I'll be selling it then however, I may get another when I get back to the states. I have been relatively impressed by it so far.

It's a UK model so I don't want to bring it back with me. Besides, I've got my Firebird to bring back. lol Any recommendations on how to fix this since I"m not welding it?
