Re: Tire Recommendations

Ditto on the Cooper love. Haven't had a chance to play in the snow with them yet. Wet traction is great & don't seem to hydroplane like I used to feel with the BFG AT/KO. Less squirm than Hankook Dynapro's. GREAT off road so far. Can't wait to get some real snow to test on/off road.

Sam

E.T.A.-Road noise is subjective. Very quiet to me, less than a BFG AT/KO. Ride is WONDERFUL (says the swamper guy).

Understood and agreed that road noise is subjective. Key detail you mentioned is "quieter than BFG AT". I've had several sets of those on other jeeps and the road noise never bothered me. So if this is relatively less, I'm all good!

I'm actually at the tire shop now getting the new shoes installed...update to follow!

Re: Tire Recommendations

Do expect a hit on MPG's for a little while. I noticed the rubber compound is very sticky until you "break in" the tires. Enjoy!

Re: Tire Recommendations

I have racked up another 2k miles in the past month including about 1200 miles of interstate driving and pulling a small trailer with a 700lb lawn tractor on it. Wet handling is great and road noise are not an issue (this is a Jeep after all). I still would consider another set if Cooper is NOT sold to investors out of India.

Any aggressive tread is going to make more noise.
For a studded SNOW tire, the Weather-Master S/T2 is quite quiet and has that michelin style road feel.

Their Discoverer M+S Sport looks very interesting as an all around tire.

Re: Tire Recommendations

General UHP's for me. Pretty decent tire so far. Cant speak of wet/snow since this jeep is garage kept.

The stock goodyear HP's should be outlawed.. Not sure why anyone would ever want that tire again.

Re: Tire Recommendations

Little update on the Cooper AT3. Got a little snow & nasty cold here in Colorado, single digit temps & packed or deeper snow on the roads were NO problem. I can kick out the rear if I gas through a turn, but the slide is predictable, letting off the gas gave instant control. Straighten out, get back on the gas & we're good. Played up Mt. Herman & Rampart Range Rd. & had great traction there as well. Mostly driving through 4" or so, with side trails holding 8"ish & drifts up to 12" the tires floated well. Pointed the rig up some fun uphill turns, traction was good there too. Very stable tire so far, on & off road. I'll give another report when I get into some deeper stuff. Play Hard!

Re: Tire Recommendations

I was looking for this thread last week and forgot I subscribed. We got 6" of snow and had high temps just above 0. The AT3s are very impressive even after 20k miles. My wife is an amateur photographer and we went out after the 6" of snow before any of the side streets were cleared. I stopped in the snow piled along the main road so she could take a couple dozen pics. I had no problems getting the WJ out of the 8+" of snow piled up by the plows. At this point I will plan on another set unless Cooper gets sold...

Plus the look sweet on the JK Moabs :-D

Re: Tire Recommendations

Trust me on this...get the Goodyear Adventure ATs. I just put them on to replace the discontinued Silent Armors which I put on 85,000 miles (highway/city and LOTS of gravel and off-road) on and they still had another 5-7000 miles in them. Since winter was coming fast I decided to switch before the bad weather arrived. These Adventure ATs have a more aggressive tread pattern but are as quiet and smooth as the silent armors. Don't mess around with Dunlop anything unless it's a bicycle tire.

Re: Tire Recommendations

Firetstone Destination LE 2.....probably the best tire for the money. Check out tirerack.com and the surveys they are pretty reliable .

Re: Tire Recommendations

I, as well, vote for the Discoverer AT3's... I live on the Illinois/Wisconsin border, so you can take my word for it when I say that the snow traction is remarkable. These tires have kept me planted in ALL driving conditions, be it dry, wet, ice, snow, or dirt. As for road noise, I can't give you an honest opinion on this as I've got a Thrush Glasspack installed, and love my music cranked to 11, lol.

Re: Tire Recommendations

I'm running Cooper also on my 95 ZJ. They are great in the snow...very happy with them all around.
