Transfer case slop and noise

98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado 6cyl. 294000 miles. Took a long road trip with no real problems. On return, first time I tried to use 4wd got loud banging and jerking. I can rotate the front driveshaft about 15-20 degrees fairly freely and when done rapidly hear what I would guess is the transfer case chain slapping the case inside. Questions are: is there an "idler/tensioner" that might have failed or can the chain stretch that much driving under no load? Can I replace the chain (or tensioner) without completely tearing down the transfer case? With that much slop, do I likely have additional problems in the front differential?

Re: Transfer case slop and noise

There is no chain tensioner in the T-case. The chain can stretch a lot and will then touch the bottom of the housing. You can change the chain, but will need to split the T-case. I believe that you can split it on the jeep, eventhough i would prefer to have it on a bench, to prevent any dirt coming in.
That there is a lot of play on the pinion/ring gear in the differential also doesn't seem to be good. I would first open up the diff cover and see how it looks inside. There could eventually be play on one or both Drive shaft CV joints, allowing the ring gear to rotate.

Re: Transfer case slop and noise

Any good videos/posts on completing the chain replacement (especially if it could be accomplished without pulling the TC off the jeep)?
I would think that front cv problems would have symptoms in 2wd as well as 4wd. I have no issues in 2wd right now (except for slight noise that again sounds like tc chain).

Re: Transfer case slop and noise

Have a look at YouTube with the T-case model you have in your jeep, there are several videos on similar or almost the same models on there.
