Transmission issues?

This is my first post so please go easy on me if I make a mistake somewhere.

We bought our Jeep in October for $500. We knew it needed some TLC because the price seemed too good to be true. It's a Grand Cherokee Laredo (ZJ?) 4.0L straight 6.

When we bought it the check engine light was on and the code that came up said the oxygen sensor was running rich. Recently, we noticed that first gear was kind of sluggish so we had the codes ran again. It came up that the governor pressure sensor and the governor pressure solenoid needed to be replaced. The symtoms we were having matched what google said would happen if they were bad.

We ordered the parts and got the wrong ones. While we waited for the right ones we lost all the gears in the transmission. We had it towed to our home and two days later replaced the pressure sensor and solenoid. We also replaced the transmission filter and gasket since we had to drop the pan anyway.

It ran great, better than ever....for about 2 hours.

Now we are dealing with some weird stuff. It shifts really weird. Sometimes it won't shift out of second. Sometimes it seems to shift through second and third before the RPMs get high enough for it to need too. The weirdest thing is, sometimes there is no problem at all. If it is acting up it seems like turning it off for a few minutes and then restarting it helps.

The fluid isn't low. It's not burned. There is no weird smell. The only code that comes up now is P0113: Intake air temperature sensor voltage high and the oxygen sensor. When it does act up it sounds maybe a bit whiney. You always know before it's going to go silly because it'll shimmy and shudder very slightly.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? I am not ready to give up yet.

Re: Transmission issues?

Welcome to the garage. Which year is your jeep, just to know if its a ZJ or a WJ?
If you check the fluid level, are there any signs of foam on the dipstick? That it ran great for a short while, shows that the replacement itself solved the problem. Can it be that some part was not fastened good enough during the replacement of the governor pressure solenoid/sensor and loosened itself?

Re: Transmission issues?

Sorry, I thought I said it was a 1996 but I didn't.

There is no foam. I thought maybe it was too low or too full too. We keep checking the fluid and the level doesn't move at all from where it should be on the dipstick.

Re: Transmission issues?

Ok, so your jeep is a ZJ.
The P0113 code didnīt appear before messing with the transmission?
I would check all wires/cable bundles for chaving. Was already anything done for the O2 sensor fault? Do you remember what the exact code was?

Re: Transmission issues?

The code for the o2 sensor was p0132. I pulled the plug off of the bad o2 sensor.

Re: Transmission issues?

I pulled the plug from the o2 sensor because I read that the o2 sensor and governor pressure sensor share the same ground. I wanted to see if that would make a difference. Whenm the o2 sensor is plugged in it runs worse.

Re: Transmission issues?

Regarding the transmission, eventhough a new problem can allways occur, i still would suspect some problem with the governor circuit or sensor circuit. Maybe a not well connected connector?
Regarding the O2 sensor, now that it is disconnected, the bank 1 will now run in open loop, which will increase the fuel consumption. Eventhough the sensor can be bad, it can also be that the wiring has melted due to contact with a hot exhaust part. The heater circuit can then feed the sensor circuit and a too high voltage will be sensed by the PCM.
The P0113 code didnīt show up before? It is a good thing when new codes pop up, to reset them and see if they come back again.
I didnīt know that the O2 and the governor sensor share the same ground. I would check the O2 sensor wiring first, because a melted isolation could cause a voltage input back to the governor sensor circuit and cause strange problems.
