Violent shaking in steering wheel

my 99 grand Cherokee limited v8 is occasionally experiencing shaking in the steering wheel on application of the breaks, lighter pressure on breaks lighter shake, it is not constant, and seem to make no difference what speed im traveling at, the other day I changed lanes while braking and got the violent shake...?? my first thought was warped rotors but now do not think so. Any ideas... like sticking or malfunctioning calipers?

Re: Violent shaking in steering wheel

Sounds more like the death wobble. Check for play in all the steering components, like rod ends, play on the ball joints.
How is the steering stabilizer?
Your jeep being a 99, isnīt it a WJ?

Can't hurt to check your hub bearings while you're checking everything else, too.

Re: Violent shaking in steering wheel

Warped rotors will bring on death wobble although the root of the problem is usually worn front end parts. I had this happen to me. The rotors started the shake but once it started look out! New rotors cured my death wobble but I still bought new ball joints and tie rod ends soon after for peace of mind.

Would start off with brakes and see where that takes you.
