2.7 throttle response -slow-

My '04 WJ 2.7 diesel has very poor throttle response for taking off from intersections when the engine is cold, and feels like it could do better.

I would appreciate some advice on how to improve the pedal to wheels power output acceleration and any information of reasons or contributing factors would be of great interest to me.
