2005 Liberty CRD Surging Continuing Problem

In July while visiting Arizona, my CRD started surging, emitting clouds of black smoke and the check engine light came on. Chapman motors said it had a bad turbo, and needed to change both the turbo and the manifold. Back ordered parts resulted in a one to two month delay. The turbo change out didn't work. Chapman then said the problem was a cracked intercooler. That didn't work. Chapman then said the problem was a cracked intercooler outlet hose and said the car was ready. I sent my spouse to Scottsdale to pick the car up and bring it back to Oregon. It was a successful return trip. However, now, the light is back on and the car is surging and emitting clouds of black smoke.
I cleaned the MAF to no avail. I unplug the MAF and the problem goes away, but of course the mil light stays on. Used an ABA test, so with the MAF plugged in, surging and smoke, but without it, no surging, no black smoke and good driving characteristics.
Before I take it in, any suggestions?
