no power to glow plugs??

Hello, i have an 07 CRD with glow plug issues. Friend of mine put the computer on it, it showed three errors, glow plug one and three , and the third error was glow plug module, and it actually said open circuit. So i spoke to a diesel guy, he said bring me two plugs, i suspect its just the plugs. Brought the plugs, he tested them, said i have no power going to my plugs, he wasn't really sure where to go from there, because he hadn't seen the merc diesel before. I can't really find any info online in regards to well.. anything with this engine really. Does anyone know how to go about the next step? I can go buy a glow plug module,, 350 bux, but i'm not sure how thats going to go when i wanna return it, if it doesn't fix the problem.

any suggestions or help would be great. I did go to the dealer, he basically said tell me how many hours you want me to put on it, and we'll go from there.. 5-10 hrs, at 89 bux an hr.. i wasn't exactly jumping up and down to drop it off to them.

thanks

troy

Check the fuse first. Glow plugs use a lot of power. all of them are supply through the relay which is controlled by PCM.

Is there a fuse for every glowplug then?

Mine gives 3 & 5 but I haven't lloked into it really

The diagnostic goes through the ECM & can only see power or no power. So imo there are 3 possibilities.
1. Glowplug wrong
2. Ground / wire wrong
3. ECM/Glowplug module wrong.

I think, I would measure with a volt meter when the engine is cold how much volts the plugs have. Then take them out put them under the voltage and see if they "glow"
If there is no voltage coming, check wires & module & ECM last...

Re: no power to glow plugs??

This Merc engine is infamous for letting a failed glow plug to kill also the control module. Most probably this is the case also here.

Re: no power to glow plugs??

my glow plug module went bad, put in upgraded one. I drove around a week with no glow plug module and none of my glow plugs went bad. The glow plugs seem pretty reliable to me.

Re: no power to glow plugs??

Hi everyone, this is my first post. This site has been very helpful to me. I required to change the glow plug module on my 3.0L crd as well so I decided to post a small video on youtube for those wanting to do this. The glow plug module seems to be updated (new part number and different shape) from the old part so perhaps it will help fix some of the problems of premature glow plug failure. The technicican told me that the diagnostic computers will often show a glow plug fault when actually it is the module to blame...he works on a lot of Sprinters with the same om642 engine. He also accurately called it when my EGR valve was cooked months ago after telling him some verbal symptoms while two other fellows could not diagnose the problem after several visits so I trust his opinion on them.
