Re: Potential diesel buyers beware this is a post from a Jeep grand Cherokee lover
I have 2008 CRD, dealer wanted 15k to fix, (ETC light/swirl actuator), I agree with Jeep lover comment, only because I have no other reason not to given the quote to repair from dealer. I am in same boat as other OM642 CRD Jeeps with swirl failure. If I was talented enough to repair I would and then maybe a different opinion. Something that is not mentioned is the plastic linkages the connect all this, one of my swirl valve crank arms was worn yet seems to be no parts? unless buying new manifold! I'm from the old days where I thought a diesel would go well over 200k without these issues, I was wrong hence my opinion. Didn't have any motor issues till now 135k, and its still laid up in shop for past 2 months trying to find parts. Why EGR butterfly plastic linkage assembly parts aren't available is beyond me.
Last three vehicles were Jeep Cherokee & Grand Cherokee's, loved them till being bitten with OM642 diesel issues. Don't get me wrong I still love the vehicle, disagree with Chrysler and the dealer in the handling on these issues. Wouldn't want this surprise to befall on any other unsuspecting CRD victim who doesn't have ability to just repair in own garage like tnadazig, lucky bastard (I say that as a compliment).
Oh well such is life, and this lack of support and parts may very well plague other manufacturers as well I just haven't been exposed to it yet.
