Re: running off road diesel

If you want to replace injectors, high pressure pump, .... you can. It can and up very costly. Not recommended.

Re: running off road diesel

off road diesel is not nessesarily the same ULSD that comes out of the street pump.

That being said off road diesel tends to either be regular ULSD that has been died red, or the take-off of USLD that doesn't meet sulfur spec.

In either case it won't do any damage to your engine or components, but if your caught it will damage your pocket book.

Re: running off road diesel

Keep dreaming. Off-road diesel is far from ULSD specs. Not just sulfur specs.

It looks like you are not in the US. Perhaps it is different in your part of the world, I cannot speak to that and don't pretend to have knowledge of your area.

Here in the US its exactly like I stated:

"That being said off road diesel tends to either be regular ULSD that has been died red, or the take-off of USLD that doesn't meet sulfur spec."

I am a ME who specialized in diesel engine calibration and emissions validation, I've been through the fuel source structure in the US and know the supply's we see so we can do our validation.

Re: running off road diesel

I don't know what exactly comes out of the pumps but according to legislation, in the States, ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD) is supposed to have < 15ppm sulphur (<10ppm in most other countries) whereas what you call off-road diesel (non-road diesel) is allowed to have up to 500ppm sulphur. High sulphur is great for engine lubrication but bloody awful for the environment.

Re: running off road diesel

You can add some 2stroke oil to the off road diesel it should be fine.
We run one on the farm an put loads of miles on it towing an its fine 2stroke lubs the system up.

Re: running off road diesel

I ve run off road and marine diesel since 1979 in rabbits, jettas, a new 95 dodge 4X4 dually with cummings which I still have at over 300K. I bought a crd new in 05 and a second one in 2010. Never had an engine failure. Lord only knows how many idle hours on the dodge. Sir Sam is right , don't get caught. I live in a no emmision check state now but when I did I would do two fill ups on street diesel with additives and run it hard before going into the emmision check station. Never failed a test. With any kind of alternate fuel it is in BTU, filtration and viscosity. I retired a few months ago and intend on doing WMO.

Re: running off road diesel

In my area the off road diesel is about 500 ppm for sulfur. If you remove all the DPF filter you should be fine. The only reason you can't run it is the DPF filter. The cats should be able to handle the extra sulfur. I have run about a half a tank in my Jeep with no problems, but that was just to get me home from my parents farm. Late night trip and didn't feel like filling up at a station. Takes about 10 tanks to get the color out. The pumps and injectors should have no issues with the added sulfur.
