Rust proofing

Is rust proofing necessary on todays cars? I was infomed when I purchased the GC that rustproofing and paint coat protection would be $1000 if I wanted them.

id steer clear of that undercarriage rust proofing, from what I have heard it can cause more harm than good by clogging up a lot of the drainage holes underneath and allowing water to pool that can cause rust. the paint coat is probably just high priced wax. Have a respectable detail shop put a good coat of wax on for you and you will be all set and save yourself $800-$900.

Re: Rust proofing

I do my own coating of the undercarriage. I make sure I don't clog up drain holes. But there really isn't many on the undercarriage. I also do a good undercoating in the door jambs and places that stuff can settle. I usually body color over it so its not so noticeable. They use salt like it's going out of style in my area so it keeps my underside looking much better. As far as paint I just do a good wax job about once a year and wash it when it gets dirty. I have done this for years and have had good results. I had a 94 Ford Ranger and the body had zero rust and the underside was pretty good for its age when I sold it last year.

Smile Re: Rust proofing

Just remember with the underbody rust proofing if it gets damaged in any way it can let the water in.
Most new Jeeps have rustproofing through galvanized panels so I don't know if rust proofing is necessary.
As for paint protection I am not a fan as a simple scratch from a branch cannot be polished out. But in saying that if you don't intend taking your jeep into the bush then it will keep it looking good.
Cheers
