Some thoughts on owning an 08 Jeep GC diesel...

I previously owned a 2008 Jeep Overland diesel 3.0L.....

Great engine, no problems at all, great torque etc..... (really the only difference between driving the diesel and the Hemi version was the slight hesitation of the diesel engine when you push the pedal hard from a stop---have to take this into account when you 'gun it' to get going somewhere off of a stop....

and waiting for the warmup engine light to go off before actually starting the engine, after turning the key (goes off instantly during the summer and only a couple of seconds of waiting during the winter, so no big deal)

What they didn't tell me about the engine was that the oil changes cost me $225 Canadian....I was a little surprised when I received the bill for the first one (thankful oil changes were only every 10,000km=6000miles)....

They also told me to always come to the dealer for the oil changes (forget the exact reason but had something to do with the independent shops weren't prepared for the procedure that had to be completed or something....can't remember exactly )....

Then, oil changes would take over one hour because they had to let the engine sit for a certain length of time during the change.....

Finally, when I first received the Jeep diesel, only certain gas stations had the ultra low sulfur diesel fuel required so I had to go searching for it ---only two in the city that I lived in....since then I believe that all diesel fuel (at least in Ontario) has to be ultra low sulfur---but some stations don't mark their gas pumps very well so I was always concerned if it didn't have the ultra low sulphur sticker on the pump....

Loved the engine performance but just a few things to consider when buying a diesel...

I definitely would buy one again though (diesel 3.0L) if it is offered at some point on the new GC....especially if it was a Mercedes diesel or at least as quiet and dependable as the Mercedes diesel engine.....

also it had better resale value than the gas version and

great gas mileage (however sometimes diesel cost more than regular fuel when I owned my vehicle, so I lost some of the benefits in cost) ....plus more mileage between fill-ups compared to the Hemi was nice as well....

Nice writeup mate! My neighbour also has a diesel WH (and he has another WH diesel before that), and he loves it too. Having driving it, I agree with what you said re the slight turbo lag, and thats to be expected with all TD's.
My neighbour owns a specialised Mercedes mechanical repair shop, and chose the GC as its the same engine/box as the ML Merc, at around half the price, at least here in Oz it is anyway.
He's also chipped his, and it really punches now. Has substantially more torque at lower rpm than my 5.7 Hemi.

when i bought my 08 i basically had the choice of any engine. I considered the diesel for its range, but im not really a diesel guy so the choice was either the gen II 4.7 FlexFuel or the 5.7 HEMI w/ MDS. This was when gas prices were at their peak. being only 20 or so HP lower then the HEMI and having FlexFuel capability i went w/ the 4.7.

I'm kind of wishing i went HEMI now for a few reasons:
1- very few stations offer E85 right now
2- i wish i had that 20 or so more HP
3- and a Laredo w/ a HEMI is rare

I'm hoping a few years down the line E85 is more abundant - that'll make me feel a little better.

But i tell ya what - your little write up about the diesel at least makes me feel better about not going w/ that..

The STEALership is pulling his chain stating that it requires special servicing. It doesn't it just needs to be treated just like any other modern high tech diesel. The STEALership is just trying to justify their ridiculous overpriced service fees. Same anywhere in the world, service manager will always assume you're stupid and feed you a big line of crap.

Wouldn't you have to special order one to have a hemi in a laredo?

I own an 08 GC with the 3.0 CRD Merc. The reason the dealership says to take it to them or approved shops for oil changes is for the warranty. If you don't, you'll void the warranty. I purchased the extended "gold" warranty because for what it costs, I saved money on oil changes as the oil changes are covered under the upgraded warranty. As far as the right gas stations to go to in Canada, I've tested several and Esso has by far the best fuel quality with Shell being the worst. I filled up twice at each one I tested. I Tried Esso, Cheveron, Husky, Shell, and Petro Canada. Those are the most common stations that serve Diesel in BC.
Esso: avg.14L/100km
Shell: avg.35L/100km.
Cheveron and Husky: avg.17L/100km
Petro Canada: avg.23L/100km
I tested all this before the engine was even closed to being broke in.
I'm getting 9L/100Km now with 17,000km on the engine and still using Esso.

These results probably won't help you American guys but I'd suggest testing a few different Stations.

Here in Australia (and I'll ad in most parts of the world!), the dealerships with TELL you that warranty is void if they don't service it, but it's untrue, ANY REGISTERED automotive workshop can complete the service work as long as they use equivelent fluids and parts, and they MUST honour any and all warranty claims assuming the service booklet is correctly stamped.
Do not believe the bullshit that dealerships tell you! lol

In europe the regular service interval is 20000km for a diesel WH(WK) compared to 10000 for normal petrol one.
What could be the reason that you guy over there need to go see the dealer every 10k????

Diesel fuel over here is also cheaper than regular petrol, you pay more roadtax for a diesel (something to do with extra tax for "dirty"vehicles).
But with the better milage you get with a diesel it's a different choice over here..........

10,000km is schedule B which includes pretty much everyone out there. 20,000 is schedule A which is pretty unrealistic. I've gone 10,000 for my first few but I'm going to start getting an analysis to see how far I can push it. I also have a kit for a bypass oil filter just need to make some time to install it as that'll definitely lengthen my schedule.

Reading your posts about the service intervals there is something I don't get

If most diesels in europe have an interval of at least 20000km or more, and Mercedes even let's the car decide when you have to go to the dealer for service (around +/-25k). They also use for petrol cars sometimes an even greater interval.


Why should a mercedes diesel in a jeep car need more service than the same engine in a mercedes car?


Owned previous diesels as wel (VW/Lancia/Alfa) and they all had an interval of 20000km or more, whilst the interval of my petrol cars where around 15000km.
Only on my Ducati bike do I need to chance the oil every 10k, and believe me that is a vehicle needing more attention to service then my jeep
