Wk2 diesel coolant change

Gday all
Changed the radiator hoses & coolant today.
Is there a trick to changing the coolant? It's supposed to hold about 12 litres but i can only get about 6 litres in. I've had to resort to pouring it in via the top radiator hose as it wont flow from the overflow bottle.
It's like im not getting all the old coolant out.

Your going to have to flush it multiple times.

unless you do block drains etc.

G'day josh
I started by draining the coolant. But even the first drain didn't look like 12L came out. Then i put a cooling system cleaner in with water. Ive drained & refilled 3 times with plain water & each time i doubt 12L comes out. I've jow got the proper coolant in, but only managed to get about 6L in before it was coming out the thermostat breather.
There must be a trick in getting all the old coolant out of the motor. Never had this problem on other cars.

Silverfox

park the jeep facing down a hill

Open the drain valve on the radiator and open rad cap

you could try using vaccuum recovery

Re: Wk2 diesel coolant change

Had the jeep facing down hill on the first drain & even though i didn't measure how much came out, it certainly didn't look like 12L & i only got about 7L in.
Looks like this is not a job that can be done properly by a backyard mechanic.

You need to remove the thermostat to get everything out.
