Clay Bar?

Clay bar removes all the surface contaminants ya can't see. Even new cars can pick up rail dust along with other things. Without clay bar to remove them, your wax will just cover them
When gliding your fingertips over an area before and after clay, you'll see what you have been missing. I'm 56 and never heard of it till like 10 years ago! Glad I found out
Here's a link on how to use

Re: Clay Bar?

I too am 56 and have waxed a bunch of cars with a bunch of different things over the years. My dad had a 72 Mark IV that he made me Blue Coral twice a year. Anyone remember how hard that stuff was? Precleaner, then the wax. No wonder I have arthritis in my elbows! The clay bar deal is so easy. Yes it's an additional step, but it goes fast once you get the hang of it. I have been using Meguire's (sp) Polymer Sealant after, then Yellow Carnuaba on top. Mine is dark blue so you really need a clean base to make it shine and look deep.

Re: Clay Bar?

I use a clay bar once every spring/summer to get that smooth as glass effect and remove all of the impurities. It is amazing how that extra step helps to produce a showroom finish when you do it right.

My steps are:

*Wash
Clay
Glaze--2x per year--see next step
Sealant--2x per year
*Paste/Liquid/Wax or Quick Wax
*Quick Detail

Note: * indicates regular wash routine

It's a lot of work and can easily be an all day job but so worth the end result.

Re: Clay Bar?

Like jaybo I use it every early spring and late summer/fall. I worked in a high end car wash in high school and first started using a clay bar back then, 15 years ago! It makes the finish a smooth as a baby butt!

You'll be surprised how many impurities the bar will take out.

One thing that you have to keep in mind is to keep the surface wet as you are using the clay bar.

Next time you wash your car run you hand over the body panels and you'll feel sum bumps. The use the clay bar and your panels will feel just as smooth or smoother then the day you purchased it.

If your vehicle is a daily driver and not being entered in The Concours d' Elegance there is no need to clay bar. I've been detailing cars for 37 years and never used one and my vehicles always look fresh out of the showroom.
Grab some Zaino All-in-One (cleaner, polish and protectant) and some detail spray for between washes and thats all you need.
So don't waste your time with a clay bar unless your gonna be walking around your car and feeling the paint for smoothness.

Re: Clay Bar?

Different opinions for different people. Maybe the zaino would be great after the clay bar.

Recommend buying TWO clay bars.

That way if you drop one, you won't be tempted to do something truly stupid and try to keep using it.

Is also impossible to use too much lube with one.

Just buy one bar and break pieces off it as you need. That way if you drop it your whole bar isn't contaminated with grit.
