Hitch rust

I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee and I'm getting surface rust on the hitch. What would be the best way to remove and prevent this? I obviously don't want other just paint over it.

Borrowing this picture from another member. Mine is a bit worse though.

Re: Hitch rust

I've used this many times at the body shop and on the farm. It's good stuff. Stops rust and tough as yak jerky.

Re: Hitch rust

Would you put that right over the rust or do something with it first?

Re: Hitch rust

Just brush off the loose, scaly rust. Leave the rest. Feather edge the paint. On the page I linked is a how to video.

Re: Hitch rust

Your other option is sandblast, self etching primer, then paint.

Re: Hitch rust

I used the Duplicolor caliper paint kit on mine and it turned out great.

Re: Hitch rust

Here is a similar product sold by Eastwood. I notice there is a link at the bottom about international customers. http://www.eastwood.com/rust-encapsulator-27490.html

Eastwood is a well respected company targeted more to the DIY and restoration market.

Re: Hitch rust

So, I went with what I could find in Canada. I first used WD40, read a lot of reviews that it does a good job displacing rust. Cleaned it up as much as I could with a course brush which actually came pretty clean. I then gave it a wash with dawn dish soap to cut the WD40 so the paint would adhere.

Next used Rust Check, Rust paint and I think it came out great! The rust paint as built in properties to stop rust and treat it.

Right now I have the hitch cap in the kitchen getting some Back to Black treatment. Going well.

End of the day, super happy how everything came out!
