I use a gentle toothbrush to dig the bugs, bug brains, bug guts...... [you get the picture] out of it with just a drop of tide detergent in a lot of water, then blot it dry with an old towel. Tide seems to work better than car wash--haven't run into any discoloration, etc.

Usually do it from inside the vehicle, stuff old towel around the area to avoid getting any splashes from the cleaning on the upholstery.

Bit of compressed air like for computers and a few assorted brushes work well for cleaning the crud out of the sides, etc.

Forgot to mention... good idea to first just use the brush, to remove everything you can. Then, if you see stuff still remaining, stains, etc. the very weak solution of laundry detergent and water will usually remove it.
