Never, ever wash your car with Dawn or any other dish detergent. Use only those specifically for use on cars.

- griots garage machine polish 1 with random orbital polisher
- hand applied collinite insulator wax (for winter)
- 303 aerospace protectant on trim and interior plastics and slush mats
- collinite leather cleaner/protectant for seats

We should be good till mid spring without another wax, and I'll wash it at least every two weeks by hand or more if necessary. For the next wax, I'll replace the dawn with regular car wash detergent, griots #2 or #3 (cleaner waxes) and finish her off with collinite 457 (i think, the detergent proof one).
Never, ever wash your car with Dawn or any other dish detergent. Use only car wash products.

Re: I got my WK2...now how to keep it clean!!

Since you're downtown, you more than likely didn't use the same dealer as me, just across the state line. The salesman touted the car was deal, when I looked at their car wash I said no thanks, offer me something else. I saw swirled paint in my future if I used theirs.

I got the detailing bug while on a suv forum with my Yukon. Hand was only unless it's a spray only but then hand dry. Even the spray only can have so much force you're taking off your protection more quickly.

Wax will give your that deeper, wetter look most like, especially on darker paints. Sealant will give your paint a nice slick feel and will last and protect longer. You can top the sealant with wax as well.

I use some Poorboys products, not real expensive but easy to use, Spray and Wipe, SSR Swirl Removers, EXP, Natural Look:

If you have lighter, metallic paint, I love the Ultimate Paint Protectant sealant:

For no dust when removing wax:

It's sometimes used to strip existing waxes and contaminants, in order to prep the surface. Zaino, for instance, recommends this. It's not something to do regularly, as it strips off all the protective wax. A very bad idea.

Thanks for all the helpful info Brewster

What do you recommend for a good, protective sealant and then a deep, wet wax to use on top of it?

Would the process be wash it correctly with multiple buckets and good soap, dry completely, apply protective sealant, wait, apply wax?

Sorry for the total noob questions but you're a huge help

This is the combo I use for sealant/wax. 2 coats of the Jetseal 109 (wait 20 minutes between coats) then wait 12 hours minimum after the 2nd coat. Next, apply 2 coats of the Pete's 53 wax. It give an amazingly deep, wet look and is very easy to remove. A little on the expensive side, but well worth it, IMHO.

No problem, that's how everyone learns! I sent you a pm.

There are a lot of good products. There are some better than what I use, but for my skill and time, there are to difficult to use.

Put your money in quality basics such as wash mit, different types of micro fiber towels.

Everyone settles on what they like to use, which gets the results they want. There's not one magic product line. I don't do it or keep up with it like I used to, so I probably don't try new stuff as much as I used to.

To remove old wax or prepping the car for the its first wash, dish detergent is recommended. Obviously it's not recommended for regular washing.

There was a lot of sticky residue on the trailing edge of the body panels, under the door handles and on the roof from whatever the factory used to wrap this thing in. Dawn, clay and some elbow grease removed everything and our Jeep was prepped for its first coat of 'real' wax.

Thanks for all the advice/input!

I purchased a good shampoo, sealant and carnauba wax. Also buckets/grit guards/MF towels.

Re: I got my WK2...now how to keep it clean!!

I use Mcguires gold class carnuba wax every three months, clay bar once a year. Hand wash with clean wash mitt with Mcguires gold class car wash. Inside I use Mcguires interior cleaner which leaves a non glossy finish. I spray the fabric seats and carpet with Scotch-Guard after they are thoroughly vacuumed. I wipe down the engine compartment with micro fiber cloth every time I wash the car. Although I don't drive very often (about 7k a year) my car does sit outside in my drive way and takes a beating from the trees. A year later my jeep still looks like it did the day I got it.
