So confused on how to detail the exterior of my baby!!

Yup, on detailing overload!! Can someone, or a few peeps - the more the merrier, pls explain to me the steps I should take on exterior detailing and a brief explanation of why those steps should be taken.

From my research it appears that to keep her looking spiffy I need to/should:

Wash (with what type of soap? I see ppl mentioning one to take off the dealer/factory sealant/wax), Clay bar, Seal, Wax....

Do I need to Polish after Clay Bar? Why/why not?

Please feel free to rep some brands you prefer, warn me of those you hate, and any more info I should be aware of. (ie Plastic Trim protectant)

To add to it what does everyone use for towels/mitts etc. I'm thinking of buying a boar's hair brush but see so many ppl advise microfiber.

PLS HELP!! The weather will clear up soon and I want to start right. THX JG!!!!!!

I love Zymöl Wax and CarBrite line of soap ... "THE KEY" w All Car is "RINSE" if it take 1/2 hour to do, then do it..... You should have 4 Wash Mitts(dif.color) :

Need to flush the bucket after each step (Mitts)...
1) TOP, Hood,trunk, Glass
2) Front grill and light, Tail light and Plate + top half wing + top half door
3) Lower wing and half door + lower grill and lower trunk but not molding...
4) Molding(trim) and Weels

Put good car soap in the bocket or dish wash soap if you are going to wax...
I always put soap on the the mitts too w restaurant ketchup bottle alike(Carbrite) to lubricate the wash
Never wash onder the sun and never on a dry surface....
If you "drop" you mitts on the floor (*Dont Use it*) ..... You need a spare one
After using all you mitts and rag clean them in your washing machine w no "softener" and air dry on a rack after..
Drying the w Air and the left over w Micro Fiber

For Waxing "Your Baby" all black plastic need to be Tape w Painter green Tape......

are you serious? That is crazy for a car wash. I consider a hard rain a nice detailing but that's just me.

I sometimes run the car through the local gas station car wash and clean the windows, but that's about as clean as my Jeep gets. I like getting it all muddy and leaving it like that for a week. my little brother is crazy about a clean car and always asks me why I would take a $40K vehicle and take it mudding and not clean it. I tell him it is a "Trail Rated" Jeep and it is supposed to be muddy and taken off road.

I used to clean my cars like you do before I had kids, now I am happy if I don't have puke or food all over the place.

Some tips...

After washing, I start with an electric leaf blower to dry off the car (it works better after it has been waxed) and then use a chaimos to dry off the remaining spots.

Regarding Waxing, I have found Zaino Brothers (available only online) to have excellent easy to use products. I use the Zaino Z-2, and then the Z-6 quick detalier between polishings. For the first wax job on your car, you may want to use the Zaino ZFX accellerator.

Wash - 2 bucket method with grit guards ... I use warm water, a genuine wool mitt, and Meguiars NXT car wash soap. Wheels get done with a seperate microfiber mitt. I work from the top down using as little force as possible to remove any dirt. It all gets done in the shade or in the evening so I don't get spots from the sun. Follow that with a claybar treatment using a quick detailer or lots of soapy water...then rinse the buckets out and re-wash the vehicle. I dry with an electric leaf blower and get any spots with a waffle-weave microfiber towel.

If you're going to detail the engine bay do it before the final wash. Don't forget wheel wells too...

Then I use Meguiars ultimate compound, followed by meguiars ultimate polish, followed by Meguairs NXT Tech Wax, followed by a coat of Meguiars Yellow Wax. Compound and Polish go on with a Porter Cable DA buffer...everything else by hand. Wheels get NXT and wax too.

Tires get dressed, glass gets cleaned inside and out, any chrome or metal gets polished sealed and waxed.

Once that's all done (and that can take a weekend), maintenance is a breeze. I'll wash about once a week and re-wax about once a month. That long process only happens maybe twice a year.

You then post before and after pictures here, and we all tell you what a great job you did.

Here's my take on a quick detail (done by hand) on a car new or not.

Wash:

1. Grab two wash buckets with grit guarts and a good quality lambswool or microfibre mitt (I use Sonus mitts and Meguairs shampoo anything decent will do). I guess you have a bucket at the moment so this will be used for the wheels.

2. You want to start with the wheels/wells so add some shampoo to your old bucket, grab an old spongue or whatever you used and some brushes. You want to rinse the wheels and wheel wells as good as possible getting all the crud out so spend a bit of time here.

3. Using some 'simple green' or a good APC give the wheel wells and tyres a good coat and brush the dirt off with a softish brush then rinse. Wheels you can clean with any non-acidic wheel cleaner or if you're lucky just regular shampoo using a soft brush and your old spongue/mitt.

4. Now once the wheels and undercarriage is clean, add the proper amount of shampoo to one bucket with the grit gaurd and half fill the other one with water.

5. Rinse the truck with your hose or ideally presure washer to remove loose dirt, working top to bottom.

6. Start cleaing from the top down gently gliding the mitt over the surface, after doing half the roof or panel rinse the mitt off the grit guard in your second bucket with clean water to remove any dirt/grit before dunking it in the shampoo bucket.

7. You may find the 'rinse' bucket water becomes pretty dirty, just empty it and refil.

8. Continute doing this all around the car until complete. If it is warm out and the water is drying keep the car as wet as possible throughout the process to avoid waterspots.

9. Now once you're done give the car a proper rinse down and dry it off with a good waffle weave microfibre towel. I like the Sonus ones.

Sounds like a lot but when you consider the wash stage is where you inflict the greatest amount of damage onto your car you really do want to do it as carefully as possible. I generally take just under 2 hours to clean and dry mine off.

Next up is the clay. I use Sonus Green clay or the Zaino stuff with Meguairs last touch (sold in gallons) as lube. You can pick up Meguair's Quik Clay kit from your local auto store, I used this in the past and it does a great job just not as econmical but it is great to get started.

Now grab your clay bar and cut it in half. Two reasons, you don't need it that big and if you drop the bar you can't use it again so it gives you a backup plan just incase.

Now, with the car freshly washed (even still wet), spray the panel liberally with some lube and run the clay bar very lightly over the paint. No presure is required. After say 10 passes the paint should feel like a babys bottom, if not continue until it does.

After each panel just wipe the panel clean with a good quality microfibre (again, I use Sonus ones).

This process will take around 45 minutes.


Polish / Glaze:


Removing swirl marks by hand is gonna take way too much time and muscle, so what you want is a glaze which cleanses the paint and fills in the swirls.

My choice here is 'Poorboys Black Hole'. It says it is designed for dark colors but works great one light colors too, giving a super slick,deep, glossy finish

You want to apply this with a foam applicator pad (Meguairs foam pads are great), just a pea sized drop on the pad will do. With a little pressure, work the glaze into the paint in left to right directions until it goes clear meaning it is fully worked in. Once this happens just wipe it off with a good microfibre (again Sonus is my choice).

Work all around the car doing your best to avoid any plastic trim.

This will probably take about 1.5 hours or so depending on how quickly you get on.


Wax / Sealant:

The fun bit!

You have a lot of choices here, you can use something as simple as Zaino Z-CS which you simply spray onto the paint, wipe it over and leave it to dry itself. Works great and is really durable too.

Or you can go for a regular wax or sealant. For this I'd probably start off with Meguiar's #16. This is a pretty cheap wax but it is superb, leaving a beautiful and durable finish. Easy on and off too.

Alternatively if you want a sealant, check out Poorboys range online, EX-P is very good also.

Waxing or applying sealant will take about 1 hour.


Misc extras:


Clean the glass (try not get glass cleaner on the paint as it will remove your wax/sealant). Apply trim dressing on your trim, wheel arches and tyre sidewalls. Polish your exhaust with metal polish etc. Any products you are happy with will do here.

Maintenance:

Well, just keep washing it which will be a lot easier now it is protected and apply an extra coat of wax or sealant every few months. You could also purchase a spray sealant such as Zaino Z8 which leaves an outstanding finish and some protection with practically no effort at all.

Laser Guided Automatic Car Wash

$8 - 6 minutes - Probably looks just as good as those who spend over an hour, and god knows how many gallons of water. Then take it home, vacuum it out, clean the windows, and shine the tires.

So there you have it, hope that helped you out and any questions, just ask.

Bump this is pretty good and thorough too! This is how I do mine, BUT, this process only needs to be done MAYBE twice a summer, known as Paint Correction. Should do it once at the beginning and once at the end of the nice warm season. Unless you live in Socal or like Florida haha, but places like the NE we get all seasons and this is a fair weather technique only for the most part. Unless of course you have inside access and dont beat on your Jeep too bad, guess its a personal call but I do it once in April/May and once in September/October

The detailers section on here has all this info plus products, links and even discount, everything you could ever really need! All in all, Id go step by step through this and then form there out you can just soap it and reapply wax if you feel. But from here out the car is gonna be pretty clean anytime you just wash it off Good luck
