Swirl Marks Help

I made the mistake of taking my brand new Jeep to get detailed by a detail shop that did a piss poor job on it.

Upon further inspection when I got back home I noticed some swirl marks in the hood (see pictures). One of them seems to be more like a scratch. I know nothing about detailing and my wife is very upset about these scratches.

Can they be removed? if so, how? is this something I would be able to do? should I find a different detailer? I appreciate your help.

Thanks.

Re: Swirl Marks Help

Find someone who has a good reputation in paint correction. They will make it look new. No big deal at all. Are you sure these scratches were not present before you got it detailed? You would be surprised how many scratches and defects are on brand new cars.

Re: Swirl Marks Help

I got the car 2 weeks ago. I am pretty sure they werent there before and this was the first time the car was being "washed". Although I know I took a good look at it when I first got it, I can't say I am 100% sure they weren't there before. However, these guys kept my car for 5 hours and my car was full of water spots everywhere, the roof was full of dirt, there were even parts with bird droppings, part of the wheels were dirty...and they were charging me $160 just for the outside...so I am positive it was them who cause these marks...plus the marks look like were done with the polishing tool as they had that circular fashion...

I am glad to know they can be removed. These guys wanted to give me a free detailing but after seeing these marks I am not trusting them with my car again. I will just have to find some other place.

Re: Swirl Marks Help

I know it sucks but any good body shop or paint correction business can get you fixed better than new.

Re: Swirl Marks Help

Do you guys know what the price range on paint correction is? Just doing a quick google search around my area they seem to run anywhere from 400-1000...does that sound like what it usually cost? I understand this probably depends on how bad the paint is, but just to have a ball park idea

Based on your pictures and description above I'm going to take a guess that they used a long handled scrub brush dipped in a bucket of suds to wash your vehicle. That's why I won't use any of the detailers around here.

Swirl Marks Help

If you were closer I would have gladly fixed that for you.

From what I can see I'd say about 95-99% of those scratches will come out. A 4 stage correction is how I would approach that using a DA.... Compound, polish, finish polish then hand applied sealant/wax.

Re: Swirl Marks Help

I am going to see if I can get a quote from a shop during lunch today. They specialize in paint correction and also offer applications of cquartz, modesta and opti-coat.

Re: Swirl Marks Help

Guy quoted me 250-300 for the hood and said a few of the scratches were too deep and won't come out 100% ... he said there are "holograms" on the side and said he would do the whole car for 750-800.

Re: Swirl Marks Help

I used to own my own detail company for 10 yrs, then sold. It and worked for a private paint and body shop doing show car's for gm and Chrysler for 6 yrs. You'll need to get the paint wheeled out. I'd personally do a 3 step (compound, polish, final polish), may be able to do a 2 step (Polish, final polish) to remove the acratches. An orbital won't cut it. A polisher will. I love 3m products, and have been using them for over 10 yrs.

Yes this guy said something along the same lines...two passes on the compound/polishing. I have an appointment for Monday, hopefully it will turn out good. Just opted to do the hood...I can live with the "holograms" which I had not even noticed until he pointed them out with the LED lights.
