Tuf Shine Tire Kit

So I've been meaning to try this stuff for quite some time now. I was waiting to get my new tires, because there has to be about 1,000 coats of various other products on my old ones. New ones got mounted, so I ordered the kit and got to work.

I started by lining them up. You can see in the close up where there was some chalky residue on them.

I'm showing the white suds and the white brush after a thorough first scrubbing. Again, these are NEW tires, so I wasn't expecting to see too much funk, but from what I've read about this kit, the results are ALL about the prep. So even though they looked clean, I kept scrubbing. Rinsed with very hot water, and dried with an electric leaf blower. On to cleaning #2.

After the second cleaning, I dried them and wiped them down with a white towel. You can see the towel is still white. I found some shiny spots that appeared to be adhesive. I cleaned all that off, and did a third and fourth scrubbing.

Again, I hit them with the leaf blower, dried them up really well, wiped them with a white terry....no funk on the towel at all. At this point, I can eat off of them.

Next post....results!

Now it's on to the shine part of this kit. You're provided an orange sponge applicator. A little goes a very long way. It'll tend to foam up when you rub it over the raised letters. Just keep going around the tire until it evens out. No runs! Keep it smooth.

Here's what you get after 2 coats. This stuff is very watery and very runny, so it goes on very easily and very evenly.

Another coat

And the 4th and final coat...

I like my tires a little shinier so I went for the 4th coat. The more coats, the deeper the gloss. You can tell they were clean...here's the applicator after the 4 coats. Still looks like it did when it came out of the box.

I've got plenty left. I barely put a dent in the shine product, but used quite a bit of the cleaner. The remaining shine product will be used for touch ups and additional applications as needed.

This stuff claims to be a permanent tire coating. It's non-greasy, so there is no reason to believe you'll get dirt sticking to your tires. The maintenance is supposed to be as easy as washing your ride. You just wash your tires with car wash, and you're done.

I can't speak to durability...I just put this stuff on and I won't be mounting these back up until spring. I'll be back in a few months to do a review on the durability and throw some more photos up here. Initial results however, are very good. If this stuff works, I'll be VERY happy to not have to worry about applying dressings on my tires anymore.

...and I haven't even polished the wheels up yet.

OK, so now I polished up the wheels. I used Meguiar's Ultimate compound (2 passes), Meguiar's Ultimate Polish (1 pass), Blackfire Sealant (1 pass), and Meguiar's Ultimate Wax (2 passes). The compound and polish went on with the Meguiars DynaCone. This was my first time using one of these. It's the perfect tool for the job. The shape works really well with the SRT style wheel. It even got into the lug holes. All that and it cleaned up like new and had no damage whatsoever. The pics below are in order of progression with the last 3 being the final product. These wheels are about 4 years old now.

I am going to find out! It's supposed to be permanent.

Don't put it passed me....I considered doing the inside sidewall.

Thanks! The reasoning for me is that once chrome chips, you're screwed. The clearcoated aluminum can be treated just like the paint on your Jeep, and if the clearcoat ever fails, you can always sand and and re-clear.

My aluminum gets frequently mistaken for chrome...so you get the shine and the ability to refinish yourself if you need to.

Saw your reference to this post over on the WJ forum. That looks awesome! Look forward to your review after some drive time on the wheels/tires. The wheels look really good too. I may be getting another WJ (With lower miles, sunroof, leather, hopefully 4WD) in the summer. Going to be hard to decide whether to go SRT Reps or lifted with pics like that!

Thanks! Will do....

No drive time yet, but after sitting for at least 2 weeks now, no peeling or cracking at all.

The street or off-road decision was a tough one for me. I came from a Wrangler on 35's, and a lifted XJ. When it came down to it, I not only liked the look, but in all honesty, I wasn't doing much off-roading at all. I spend the vast majority of my time on asphalt.

Well, I got some miles on those Tuf-Shined tires...here's my "after" report.

This stuff holds up very well. Everytime I wash the Jeep, I wash the tires (one or two swipes around) with just regular car wash suds. The mitt comes out clean. Dirt does not stick and no residue is left behind. After some miles, they do lose some of the shine, but they do keep a new-looking matte finish. Here's a few shots after a wash:

A quick touch up with some additional TufShine product and this is what happens:

I can't explain how little of this product is needed to touch up...it's ridiculous. It's super thin and goes a REALLY long way. Overall, I'd love to see a product retain that ridiculous level of gloss, but I have to say I'm VERY happy with this stuff. No more goopy, greasy crap on the tires to attract road funk, and the tires always look clean. I highly recommend this kit. Just remember, whatever you do, it's all about prep. I have no doubt this will fail miserably if your tires aren't absolutely pristine when you lay on the first few coats.

Thanks for the detailed write up as well as the "after" report. Nice job!:cool:
