Wax by hand or machine???

Any thoughts on advantages/disadvantages of applying wax by machine rather than hand?

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

I personally feel its better to wax by hand, even glazes I prefer applying by hand.

However, using a machine you can apply a thinner coat to the paint if you are not very good at doing this by hand. IMO you really need a liquid wax or sealant to use by machine although paste waxes can be applied by machine its more hassle than its worth.

If the wax or sealant has 'swirl filling properties' then applying it by machine will make them much more effective as they will be worked into the paint better.

That's just my 2c, but waxing by hand is very therapeutic. Either is fine and generally doesn't make a difference.

On another note, if you do use a DA machine when your done you can wrap a MF cloth over the pad and use the machine to remove the wax too.

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

I'd think it's personal prefence, Martyp brings up very vailid points and I'd have to agree that hand waxing can be very therpeutic.

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

i prefer using a DA than hand. It saves time/energy and it "seems" i get a better result using the DA.

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

Depends on my mood. However, I usually always remove by hand.

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

DA if I am doing the entire car. Remove by putting a MF bonnet over a more dense foam pad
Great article from Mike Phillips on applying via DA

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

Thanks to all for your feedback. I will probably go with the DA just because I'm curious as to how much easier it will be to use and if the results are any better.

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

By hand for me...I can't get into all the places I do by hand with a DA. Especially door jambs, wheels, near the rear license plate along the top edge, the lower facia, etc. I use my DA for Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish, but do the sealing and waxing by hand.

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

Car waxes makes the surface of a car reflect more light. I have always hand waxed my cars. I prefer paste wax over liquid. you can control how much you use, and it seems to last longer.

Re: Wax by hand or machine???

machine will ALWAYS put down a thinner and more uniform layer of wax by hand. you can't even argue that point. wax is wax only if you miss spots will it not seem to be working as much!
