Wet winter boot smell!

I was out of town for a while and my wife tracked quite a bit of snow in the jeep that then thawed out and soaked the driver's side carpet. Now the carpet has a stinky wet winter boot smell even after I dried it out. Anyone have this problem in a jeep and found a way to get rid of the smell? Do I have to replace the carpet?

Re: Wet winter boot smell!

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. We have a third vehicle which is our truck and I've had this same exact experience. For some reason I absolutely hate this smell and I do have a solution for you. I have typically just sprayed the Chemical Guys Sofast Odor Eater on the mats, carpets and any other potential sources. It helps actually kill any bacteria causing the smell. If you use a brush to agitate the carpet it will help work the product in between the fibers. If for some reason you have an extra awful odor you can get the concentrated version of this cleaner with the Chemical Guys Extreme Offensive Odor Eliminator - Concentrated. Most times this is not needed but it's not a bad product to have around either. I hope this helps!

Re: Wet winter boot smell!

thanks, I actually have a Bissell carpet cleaner machine. Normally I mix the detergent in the Bissell carpet cleaner tank, but I found that was not getting rid of the smell!

So I put some carpet cleaner detergent in a spray bottle and sprayed the area and then used a brush to work it in. Then I used the Bissell carpet cleaner machine as normal (rinse, scrub, vacuum). I had to do this whole procedure 3 times to get rid of the smell. I've now changed floor mats to better ensure that no water gets to the rug.

I'm sure your method would've worked too as it sounds similar to what I ended up doing.

There isn't anything to support bacterial growth under the carpet- ur most likely smelling mold and mildew. No matter what, once it dries out the smell should go away. I live in Cleveland, so to deal with all the snow and wet I cut up a commercial grade carpet ( like the ones in the front of restaurants) to make floormats. They have great coverage, have a waterproof rubber back, are inexpensive, and hold water like a diaper. I also spray car and driver new car smell febreeze which helps a lot.

Re: Wet winter boot smell!

Just get a set of slush mats for the front, that way they will hold any snow or water and keep it from soaking into the carpet.

I had slush mats and gave them to my brother in law for his GC - they didn't hold enough and would run off the side while driving. I actually ordered the weathertech digital liners and I think I'll put my carpet mats on top of them.

I had the same problem, the water ran over the slush mat. I'm also going to try the weathertech, but they are pricey.

Re: Wet winter boot smell!

Pricey, but worth it...I got some for my WJ and NOTHING gets even close to the carpeting. We got a warm spell a few days ago so I pulled them out, sprayed them with degreaser, a little brush, rinse...look like new again...and the carpet underneath was clean and dry.
